pure, luminous, the soul recognizing itself in the infinite — then jaap sahib is what comes next.

it is the warrior walking out into the world.

“jaap sahib gives you the strength of the mind behind every muscle of yours. and if you want to change, you have to take the name of god everywhere, with every breath. it should be in you and you should recite it, and you should be with it, and you should become it. and that is the way to be spiritual.” — yogi bhajan

jaap sahib was composed by guru gobind singh — the tenth sikh guru — at anandpur sahib around 1677. he was approximately eleven years old. it opens the siri dasam granth sahib, just as japji opens the siri guru granth sahib. recited together in the ambrosial hours, they form one of the most powerful sound current combinations in the entire tradition. two legs to walk on. two wings to fly.

———

bhakti and shakti

the sikh lineage moves, across two centuries and ten gurus, from the pure bhakti — devotion and surrender — of guru nanak, to the shakti — power, courage, and warrior spirit — of guru gobind singh. japji and jaap sahib embody this arc completely.

japji overwhelms the mind with infinitude. it describes the endless, uncountable, incomprehensible vastness of the divine — and the mind surrenders in awe.

jaap sahib uses a different strategy entirely. it describes the divine through negation — undying, no-form, without name, beyond elements, invincible. you cannot categorize what has no category. the mind tries to grasp and finds nothing to hold. it surrenders through exhaustion rather than wonder. both arrive at the same place — but through entirely different doors.

“jaap sahib is not just to praise god. i have experienced and i believe that these things are there to make us highly sensitive, absolutely creative and extremely intuitive.” — yogi bhajan

———

the sound technology

guru gobind singh was a master linguist. jaap sahib is composed in six languages — braj bhasha, persian, arabic, urdu, prakrit, and sanskrit — all transliterated into the gurmukhi script. this was deliberate. each language carries different phonetic structures, different elementary energies, different resonances in the brain and body. the range of sounds available across six languages is vastly greater than any single tongue can produce.

the result is a composition of extraordinary phonetic sophistication. the sound-scape is engineered — in the same way a raga is engineered — to produce specific states of consciousness through the vibration of specific sounds in the nervous system.

and it is fast. guru gobind singh’s jaap sahib is meant to be recited swiftly, like a dancing warrior, like galloping horses. the rhythm is the point. different sections — called chands — each carry their own pace and flavor:

bhujang prayaad: swiftly moving cobra

chaachree: lightning

charpat: strike

these are not titles chosen for poetry. they are instructions. the rhythm of war dance, the clashing of swords, the movement of a cobra — these rhythms move through the nervous system and activate something that slower, more contemplative recitation cannot reach.

“this summer i want to show you how in very old times, in a state of ecstasy, people used to worship god through yogic exercise. that is how i learned jaap sahib, by exercising with it. do it with devotion. sing it! copy it! become sharp.” — yogi bhajan

———

namo namo namo namo

jaap sahib is a salutation to god in which guru gobind singh recites every facet of the divine. every possible name, attribute, and negation of attribute. in the jaap, the sikhs of guru gobind singh took every aspect of god and bowed and bowed and bowed. they brought god and his aspect to the whole thing — namo, namo, namo, namo.

you are an idiot. you are most intelligent. you are sickness. you are health. this is not paradox for its own sake. it is the teaching that god is in all of it — the idiot and the master, the sickness and the health, the warrior and the saint. when you feel god everywhere, then you become fearless. when you become fearless, you have no vengeance. when you have no vengeance, you don’t play games. and then you stop wasting your life on nonsense.

“when guru gobind singh recited jaap sahib, he knew it already, he didn’t have a problem. he did it for all, he gave us jaap sahib. when your grace, your power, your position is in danger — that is what this bani was given to you for. whosoever recites this bani shall never fall flat on his face.” — yogi bhajan

———

the power of ek achree chand

yogi bhajan specifically highlighted one section of jaap sahib — the ek achree chand, sometimes called ajai alai — as one of the most powerful passages in the entire composition.

if you can mentally remember and verbally recite ek achree chand, it doesn’t matter what your karmas are, it doesn’t matter who you are. if you can remember it and recite it eleven times, there is nothing as a woman you need as a grace which shall not be bestowed upon you by the hand of god. no human being can give you anything anyway.

this is the promise of the bani. not earned through years of perfect behavior. available through the sound current, to anyone who will recite it.

———

chattr chakkr vartee

the closing lines of jaap sahib — chattr chakkr vartee — are among the most beloved in the entire kundalini yoga tradition. yogi bhajan used them extensively during kriyas and meditations. they are chanted for the removal of fear, for victory, for the experience of the infinite in the body.

chattr chakkr vartee, chattr chakkr bhugatay

suyambhav subhang sarab daa sarab jugatay

dukaalan prantay, diaalang saroopay

sadaa ang sangay, abhangang bibhootay

you are pervading in all the four directions at all times. you are self-illumined and united with all. destroyer of bad times, embodiment of mercy — you are always with us. you are the everlasting giver of indestructible power.

chanted during yoga, during meditation, during anything that requires you to move through fear — these lines carry the energy of guru gobind singh himself. the warrior-saint. the one who faced impossible odds and did not break.

“recite jaap sahib with every breath. let the word of god be on your tongue always. when you do things and the word of god is with you, when you live like this, then on your tongue the word of god makes you god.” — yogi bhajan

———

japji and jaap together

in the amrit ceremony — the sikh baptism — jaap sahib is recited as the second of the five banis, directly after japji. the two are always paired. japji is recited over the amrit, then jaap sahib, building the sacred water with the vibratory force of both compositions.

they represent the complete human being: bhakti and shakti, devotion and power, lunar and solar, the soft and the fierce. guru nanak and guru gobind singh. a journey from the awakening of humility and wonder to the full flowering of the warrior-saint who is afraid of nothing and subject to no one.

shaheed baba deep singh — one of the greatest sikh martyrs — recited both japji and jaap 108 times every day. one understanding of this is that he recited them so often, with such intensity, that they became anahad ajapa in his being — every cell of his body vibrating both compositions continuously and automatically. he became the naad of japji and jaap in their complete purity and power.

that is the destination. it begins with picking up the bani and reciting it, imperfectly, for the first time.

“always remember the most powerful, effective way is to copy jaap sahib, because you are not copying the words, you are copying the creative essence of the word, the naad. there is no other way that you can learn about sensitivity.” all of the mysteries of the universe, all of the spiritual powers of transformation — it is all contained in japji.

“guru nanak gave us japji, a condensed version of the siri guru granth sahib. it contains all of the mysteries of the universe, as well as spiritual powers of transformation for issues in our daily lives. it’s all embedded in the sound current, and it works as a technology. it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, what you believe in, if you know the language, nor the translation. the sound current changes your neurology, works on your soul, and gives you the coding and patterns of spiritual evolution.” — yogi bhajan

———

what japji is

jap means to repeat, to recite consciously. ji means soul. japji is the repetition of the soul — the practice of connecting directly to your own infinite source and singing its praises.

it is the first composition in the siri guru granth sahib and one of the five daily prayers of the sikhs. in the kundalini yoga tradition, japji opens the aquarian sadhana every morning — recited in full before the yoga and meditation begin. it sets the frequency for everything that follows.

the structure is precise and mathematical. there are 40 pauris — 40 steps, like a staircase. the word pauri means step. the teaching is that japji starts from god and comes to earth, descending through each pauri in a specific sequence that traces the soul’s relationship with creation. mathematically: five tattvas multiplied by eight chakras (including the aura) equals forty. the entire map of the human energetic system is encoded in the structure.

“japji is a teacher for anyone seeking truth. the sound current of japji and the meaning of its words, when meditated upon with openness and love, awakens a soul to its destiny.” — from the 3HO teachings on japji

———

the mul mantra: the root

japji opens with the mul mantra — the root mantra, the foundational statement of reality from which everything else flows:

ik ong kaar, sat naam, kartaa purakh, nirbhao, nirvair, akaal moorat, ajoonee, saibhang, gur prasaad. jap. aad sach, jugaad sach, hai bhee sach, nanak hosee bhee sach.

one creator, truth is its name, it is the doer of everything, without fear, without enmity, undying form, unborn, self-illumined, by the guru’s grace — recite. true in the beginning, true through the ages, true even now, nanak says truth shall ever be.

this is the download. the entire spiritual reality of the universe, compressed into a single mantra. yogi bhajan said that meditating on the mul mantra gives you your identity — the soul’s direct recognition of its own truth and origin.

———

the pauris as technology

each of the forty pauris has a specific vibratory effect — a specific quality of consciousness it cultivates, a specific problem it addresses, a specific aspect of the human experience it transforms. this is not metaphorical. these are documented effects, tested over centuries of practice by the sikh and kundalini yoga lineages.

the first pauri lifts you from the deepest depression, insecurity, and fear. chanted eleven times a day for forty days, it addresses the root of all these states at the energetic level — without therapy, without analysis, without having to figure out where they came from.

the third pauri turns insufficiency into sufficiency. depression into elevation. low self-esteem into genuine self-confidence — not performance, but the real thing, rebuilt from the inside out.

the fourth pauri breaks through the trap of poverty consciousness — the deep, often inherited belief that there isn’t enough, that you won’t have what you need.

the sixteenth pauri — whose final words were given by baba siri chand, first son of guru nanak — is the mantra that moves heaven and earth when things are stuck. aad sach, jugaad sach, hai bhei sach, nanak hosee bhei sach. the bhei instead of bhee is specific, and the difference is the difference between something that confirms truth and something that removes what is blocking it.

the twenty-fifth pauri pre-fulfills all your needs — prosperity, virtue, estate, and wealth arrive without asking when this pauri is practiced. yogi bhajan taught it as one of the most powerful prosperity meditations available.

the thirty-seventh pauri cuts karma. not softens it, not processes it — cuts it. the vibratory frequency of this pauri eliminates the impact of karmas that would otherwise play out across lifetimes.

the thirty-eighth pauri gives you the power to rewrite your own destiny.

“with the complete recitation of japji sahib, it is said that every problem can be solved and dissolved.” — from the teachings of sikh dharma

———

how to practice

the full recitation of japji takes approximately twenty to twenty-five minutes. it is traditionally recited in the ambrosial hours — in the early morning, before sunrise, as part of the sadhana. this is when the earth’s electromagnetic field is most sattvic and the sound current lands deepest in the subconscious.

you don’t need to understand gurmukhi. the tongue strikes the palate in the specific patterns of the sound current, the meridian points are activated, the hypothalamus receives the signals, and the transformation begins — regardless of whether the conscious mind has decoded what is being chanted.

if the full japji feels out of reach, start with one pauri. choose the one that corresponds to what you’re working with right now. chant it eleven times a day for forty days. this is a complete practice — specific, targeted, and cumulative.

“the repetition of japji gives you a consistent projection and allows you to access your own infinite source of inspiration and depth.” — from the 3HO teachings on japji

after forty days of daily practice, most people find they have memorized the pauri without trying. the sound current installs itself. and then it begins to run — quietly, continuously — beneath the level of conscious attention. this is the beginning of ajappa jap: the state of reciting without reciting, where the sound current becomes the background frequency of your life.

———

the song of the soul

. guru nanak wrote japji in ecstasy. it carries that ecstasy in its sound current. when you chant it, you are receiving a transmission that has been passed forward across six centuries, from soul to soul, morning after morning, before the sun rises.

every problem can be solved and dissolved. guru nanak said so. and he didn’t just say it — he encoded the solution in the sound.

“recite japji in the ambrosial hours. this divine habit will carry us through the ethers like a lightning bolt at the time of death.” and offered a single, precise solution: the shabd guru, the sound technology embedded in the siri guru granth sahib, available to every human being regardless of religion, background, or belief.

“the massive overload of information we will all be subjected to can destroy the balance of the mind and create conditions of unimaginable disorientation. the quantum technology of the shabd guru can help thousands of people: to regain lost balance, to strengthen virtues already developed, and to overcome obstacles.” — yogi bhajan, 1995

he called it quantum technology. not a spiritual practice, not a religious observance — a technology. and understanding why he used that word changes everything about how you approach it.

———

what shabd guru means

shabd comes from two roots: sha, meaning the expression of the ego — the attachments we identify with — and bd, meaning to cut out, to eradicate. the root meaning of shabd is that which cuts the ego.

guru comes from gu, meaning darkness or ignorance, and ru, meaning light and knowledge. a guru is an active knowledge — one that changes you at the level of your cells and your subconscious, not just your ideas.

shabd guru, then, is the sound that cuts the ego and transforms darkness into light. it is not a concept. it is a living technology. and it is codified — precisely, completely — in the siri guru granth sahib.

“the shabd guru transforms the practitioner by removing the barriers erected by the needs of the ego.” — yogi bhajan

———

why quantum

a technology is the application of a science. the science here is the science of sound — specifically, the relationship between primal sound patterns and the neurological, endocrine, and energetic systems of the human body.

it is quantum because it works at the smallest level — the atoms of sound — and uses those quantum patterns as seeds that construct larger patterns. the atoms of sound build the molecules of language, thought, and mind. change the atoms and you change everything built from them.

this is not a poetic analogy. the mechanism is specific and documented.

“just as combining atoms opened the way to use the greatest energy in matter, the quantums of sound are the atoms that open the way to the greatest inner energy of consciousness and command the chemistry of the brain.” — yogi bhajan

———

the mechanism: tongue, palate, brain

the upper palate of the mouth contains 84 meridian reflex points — 64 along the hard palate near the base of the teeth, 20 on the soft palate. these points are connected, through the meridian system, directly to the hypothalamus — the master regulator of body temperature, hunger, mood, sleep, and glandular function, which is itself connected by blood vessels to the pituitary gland.

when you chant a shabd, the tongue moves across these reflex points in a specific, rhythmic pattern. the pattern sends signals to the hypothalamus, which relays them to the pituitary, which adjusts the entire endocrine system. the chemistry of the brain shifts. the neurotransmitters change. the nervous system recalibrates.

this is why the pronunciation matters. this is why chanting out loud produces a different result than mental repetition alone. the tongue is the instrument. the palate is the keyboard. the shabd is the specific sequence of keystrokes that produces the specific result.

“rotating the tongue over the 84 reflex points in the pattern of the shabd produces the maximum impact on the neuro-endocrine system.” channels called surs, each one a flow of prana, of life force. these 72 strings are controlled by three central channels: the ida on the left, the pingala on the right, and the shushmana running up the center of the spine.

the upper chakras vibrate with the release of each independent thought. thoughts are released at a rate of up to one thousand per blink of the eye. each thought plucks the strings. the strings vibrate into 72,000 channels. their vibration creates the shape and function of the physical body, the emotional body, and the mental body.

when you vibrate a shabd in the central channel — when you bring full attention to the sound pattern and surrender into it — it induces a synchronous pattern throughout all 72 strings. the instrument comes into tune. what was scattered becomes coherent. the symphony of your body, mind, and energy begins to play from the same score.

“you are the composer of your own life. there is a musical score that originated at the beginning of creation. the rhythm and sound of this score is recorded in the shabd guru and can be consciously applied to your life.” the state where the shabd has become so embedded in the nervous system and the subconscious that every cell of the body vibrates it, continuously, without deliberate effort.

in this state, the resource released by the shabd guru is always available — regardless of what the conscious mind is doing. you are walking, working, talking, and the shabd is running underneath, constantly calibrating the nervous system, constantly attuning the strings.

this is mastery. it comes from devotion, sustained practice, and sometimes grace. but it begins with jappa — conscious, conscientious recitation. you start by repeating the shabd deliberately, until it repeats itself.

“when you reach a stage of mastery, you still recite the shabd out loud because you have become the shabd and the shabd has become you. there is a merger between the personal experience of you and the impersonal experience of infinity beyond you and within you.” — yogi bhajan

———

the shabd guru and the aquarian age

yogi bhajan spent decades preparing people for the age we are now living in. he saw it clearly: an era of information overload, technological acceleration, artificial intelligence, and unprecedented pressure on the human psyche. he mapped the specific syndromes of mental and emotional breakdown that this era would produce — and he offered the shabd guru as the primary antidote.

the shabd guru is a special kind of technology with a unique contribution to the aquarian age. in the body it produces vitality. in the mind it awakens intelligence and develops wisdom and intuition. in the heart it establishes compassion. in consciousness it builds the clarity to act with fearless integrity.

those who practiced these techniques excelled with stamina and motivation, gained clarity in their values, dropped addictive habits, and were healed from mental and physical ailments. the outcome of this great shift of age depends on our ability to assess and command our own consciousness. the shabd guru is the tool for that command.

“information on anything and anybody is available to everyone. in such a world, your value will not rest in what you acquire, find, or know. it will rest in who you have become through the experience of what you find. value will lie in your capacity and consciousness to use information. that is what the shabd guru develops.” — yogi bhajan

this is the teaching for today. not information management. consciousness development. the shabd guru builds the inner architecture — the nervous system, the neutral mind, the intuition — that allows a human being to navigate the information age without being destroyed by it.

———

the subconscious and the flood

the greatest challenge the shabd guru faces is the practitioner’s own subconscious. when you begin to chant, the shabd provokes a release of stored subconscious patterns — old thoughts, old feelings, old programs that have been running beneath the surface for years. they rise up like a flood.

most people stop here. they interpret the flood as evidence that the practice isn’t working, or that something is wrong. the opposite is true. the flood is the clearing. the shabd is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

if you persist in repeating the shabd under the flood — if you keep chanting through the resistance, the restlessness, the barrage of the subconscious mind — the new pattern establishes itself. the mind clears. dormant capacities awaken. the fog lifts.

“the shabd guru acts as informational DNA for the spirit. the patterns are a perfect weave of rhythm, sound, tone, focus, and meaning. there is nothing as effective and universal as those patterns to program the consciousness to be in alignment with the soul.” — yogi bhajan

———

it doesn’t matter if you believe it

this is the teaching that keeps coming back, from guru nanak all the way through yogi bhajan: it doesn’t matter who you are, what you believe, whether you know the language, whether you understand the translation. the sound current works regardless. the tongue strikes the palate. the hypothalamus receives the signal. the chemistry shifts. the consciousness moves.

the shabd guru is not a religious commitment. it is a technology. you can use a technology without believing in it. the question is only whether you use it correctly and consistently enough for it to work.

it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, what you believe in, if you know the language, nor the translation. the sound current changes your neurology, works on your soul, and gives you the coding and patterns of spiritual evolution.

———

we are living exactly in the storm yogi bhajan described in 1995. the information overload, the disorientation, the pressure on the mind and nervous system — — yogi bhajan, aquarian teacher training manual

when you chant a mantra, you are striking a note. the universe, being a vibratory field, resonates with that note. things that are vibrating at that frequency begin to move toward you. things that are not begin to move away. this is not a metaphysical hope. it is the physics of resonance, applied to consciousness.

———

what the word means

mantra comes from two sanskrit roots: man, meaning mind, and tra, meaning to cross over, or to free from. a mantra is a vehicle that takes the mind across — from its ordinary, conditioned, reactive state into something clearer, higher, more aligned with the soul.

a mantra is also sometimes called a shabd — from the gurmukhi word for sound or word. in the sikh dharma tradition, the shabd is not just sound — it is the living word of the guru, the vibration of truth itself, encoded in specific syllables that carry specific frequencies. when you chant a shabd, you are not just making sound. you are invoking a living, intelligent force.

“in sound we are born, in sound we are healed.” — yogi bhajan

———

how it works

the mouth contains 84 meridian points on the upper palate — 64 in the hard palate and 20 in the soft palate. the tongue, striking these points in the specific patterns of a mantra, sends signals directly to the hypothalamus, which regulates the glandular system, the nervous system, and the brain.

this is the mechanism. the tongue is the instrument. the palate is the keyboard. the mantra is the specific sequence of keystrokes that produces a specific neurological and energetic effect.

this is why the exact pronunciation matters. it is also why translation is secondary. yogi bhajan was clear: it doesn’t matter if you understand the meaning of the mantra intellectually. the sound current works on the subconscious and the nervous system regardless of whether the conscious mind has decoded it. the vibration is the point.

“it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, what you believe in, if you know the language, nor the translation. the sound current changes your neurology, works on your soul, and gives you the coding and patterns of spiritual evolution.” — yogi bhajan

———

the subconscious and mantra

with every blink of the eye, 1,000 thoughts download into the crown chakra. most of them go straight into the subconscious — a holding tank of patterns, reactions, memories, and programs that run beneath conscious awareness and drive most of human behavior.

this is why willpower alone doesn’t change behavior. the program is running beneath the level where willpower operates.

mantra goes beneath it. the sound current enters the subconscious directly — not through analysis, not through examination, but through vibration. it installs a new pattern. it re-codes the neurology. it clears the subconscious the way moving water clears sediment — not by picking through it piece by piece, but by flowing through it and carrying it out.

“chanting is a science. it can give you an experience beyond time and space, and the experience of your own soul. it can take you to the theta brain-wave experience. it can bring the unconscious to conscious awareness.” — yogi bhajan

this is why mantra-based meditation produces results that talk therapy cannot. therapy operates at the level of the conscious mind — it examines the contents of the subconscious tank. mantra transcends the tank entirely. you don’t have to understand your patterns to clear them. you just have to chant.

———

naad yoga

naad is the essence of all sound — the underlying current of vibration from which all manifest reality emerges. naad yoga is the yoga of sound: the practice of using specific sound currents to tune the instrument of the human body and mind to the frequency of the infinite.

the rishis who developed these technologies perceived, in deep states of meditation, that the universe is made of sound. not sound as we ordinarily experience it — but a primordial vibration that underlies all matter. when you chant mantra, you are aligning your own vibration with this primordial field. you are, quite literally, tuning yourself to the universe.

“naad is the sound which is the basis of all that has been said, felt, understood, and realized. it is the unstruck, infinite sound current which runs through the entire cosmos. to be one with naad is to be one with all creation.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

———

the spoken word

yogi bhajan’s book on this subject is called the power of the spoken word — and that title is the teaching. every word you speak is a mantra. every sentence you utter is vibrating something into the field of your life.

this is why he said: three mantras you should never say. i don’t know. i’m not ready. i can’t do it. not because of positive thinking psychology — but because the spoken word programs the subconscious, and the subconscious creates the life. you are, at every moment, mantrating your own reality into existence through the words you choose.

this cuts both ways. gossip, complaint, self-criticism, harsh speech — these are mantras too. they install patterns just as a formal mantra does. the difference is that conscious mantra installs what you want. unconscious speech installs whatever the reactive mind produces.

“when you speak, the sound and rhythm of your words express your state of consciousness. when you repeat out loud the words of enlightened human beings, you enlighten your own consciousness — just by repeating them.” — yogi bhajan, the power of the spoken word

———

what makes a mantra correct

yogi bhajan was asked why kundalini yoga draws so heavily on sikh mantras from the siri guru granth sahib. his answer was precise: because those mantras happen to be correct. the sound is correct. not because of their religious origin, but because the specific syllables, in the specific patterns, produce the specific effects they are designed to produce.

a mantra is correct when the sound current is pure, the pattern is complete, and the frequency produced aligns with the intended result. this is why mantras are not invented casually. they are received — by beings in states of deep meditative awareness who could perceive the relationship between specific sound combinations and specific states of consciousness.

“those mantras just happen to be correct mantras. the sound is correct, so we use it.” — yogi bhajan

this is also why the Aquarian Sadhana mantras — the specific sequence chanted every morning in kundalini yoga community — are not interchangeable with other mantras for this purpose. each one was selected by yogi bhajan for its specific frequency and effect in the context of early morning practice. the sequence is a technology. the order matters.

———

mantra and meditation

meditation without mantra is possible. but mantra accelerates everything. the mind, left to its own devices in silent meditation, tends to wander — following thought currents, generating commentary, drifting into sleep. mantra gives the mind something to do that is consistent with the goal of meditation. it keeps the conscious mind occupied with a sound current while the deeper clearing happens beneath.

this is why so many kundalini yoga meditations use mantra: it is the fastest, most reliable way to produce the meditative state and sustain it long enough for the nervous system and subconscious mind to genuinely shift.

“we chant mantras so that your souls may be ignited like candles.” — yogi bhajan

———

you are already vibrating. you have been since before you were born. the question is whether you are vibrating consciously or at the mercy of whatever frequency the environment, the media, the minds of others have installed in you.

mantra is the choice to vibrate deliberately. to pick the note. to strike it over and over until it becomes the baseline frequency of your life.

chant, or even just listen ❤️‍🔥

amrit vela - the ambrosial hours

the ambrosial hours: the time of nectar

liv radha

the ambrosial hours: the time of nectar

there is a window of time every morning — before the sun rises, before the world turns on, before the noise starts — where something different is available.

the ancient teachings call it amrit vela. the ambrosial hours. literally: the time of nectar.

“in the ambrosial hours, many devotees and gursikhs are awake. they all meditate and do their nitnem. thus, a huge combining of the forces in the heaven showers blessings on the people of earth who are awake at that time to receive them.” — yogi bhajan

this is not poetry. it is a description of a real energetic phenomenon — one that has been understood and utilized by every major spiritual tradition in human history. the early morning hours before sunrise are different in kind from the rest of the day. and if you have ever sat in stillness before the world woke up, you already know this.

———

what amrit vela is

amrit vela — amrit meaning nectar, vela meaning time — refers to the two and a half hours before sunrise. depending on the season and your location, this falls roughly between 3:00 and 6:00 or 7:00am. the golden temple in amritsar opens its doors at 2:00am in summer and 3:00am in winter. the morning prayers have begun before the rest of the world considers waking.

yogi bhajan was precise about the science: when the sun is at 60 degrees below the horizon, the angle of light hitting the earth creates a specific electromagnetic condition. the earth’s own field is at its most sattvic — clear, elevated, receptive. the psychic channels of the human being are most open. the subconscious mind, which has been processing and releasing during sleep, is in its most accessible and malleable state.

this is when the practice lands deepest. not because you are more disciplined at 4am, but because the conditions are genuinely different — and your nervous system, your subtle body, your arc line — they all respond to these conditions in ways that midday practice simply cannot replicate.

“when i tell you to get up and meditate in the ambrosial hours, it seems odd. why should you get up at 3:30am? because you require those two hours to work out your own mind, so that the rest of the day you can work out your life.” — yogi bhajan

———

the science of the 60 degree angle

the 60 degree angle is specific and it matters. yogi bhajan explained it this way: when the sun is 60 degrees below the nadir — the point directly beneath you — both nostrils are breathing simultaneously. this is a rare physiological event. most of the time, one nostril is dominant over the other, governing which hemisphere of the brain is more active. when both nostrils flow equally, both hemispheres balance — and the neutral mind becomes accessible.

this is also why 4pm to 7pm — the sandhya vela, or twilight time — holds a similar quality. the sun hits 60 degrees on its descent. birds become active at both of these times, instinctively responding to the shift in the electromagnetic field. you would too, if you were tuned to it.

guru nanak said it directly in japji sahib, the fourth pauri: amrit velaa sach naao vadiaa-ee veechaar — in the ambrosial vela, chant the true name and contemplate the divine greatness. this was not a casual recommendation. it was embedded in the foundational text of sikh dharma as a daily instruction.

“our life force is based on the sun’s energy. when the sun hits the sixty-degree angle, we are on the sliding projection of the top peak of our mental projection. when we rise in the ambrosial hours, meditate, and empty our subconscious mind, the unconscious mind can bring in virtues and opportunities.” — yogi bhajan

———

what happens when you practice here

the subconscious mind has been running all night — processing the day’s input, filing, releasing, dreaming. just before waking, it is still close to the surface. if you sit in meditation at this time, you have access to layers of the psyche that are much harder to reach later in the day when the conscious mind has taken over and the world has started talking.

mantra practiced in the ambrosial hours cuts deeper. the nervous system is rested, the electromagnetic field of the earth is clear, the conscious mind is not yet running its full agenda — and so the sound current lands in the subconscious without the usual resistance. this is why yogi bhajan said that sadhana in the ambrosial hours will correct your emotional imbalances automatically. you don’t have to analyze them. you just have to show up and practice.

“sadhana is not a miracle. it is just imprinting the molecules in an elevated form.” — yogi bhajan, february 15, 1999

the karmas of the day ahead are also accessible here. the ancient teaching is that what you do in the ambrosial hours sets the tone for everything that follows — not metaphorically, but literally. the vibratory frequency you establish in your practice becomes the frequency you carry into your interactions, your decisions, your relationships. you are pre-setting the field.

———

the 10 percent

yogi bhajan offered a simple framework: give one tenth of your time to god. one tenth of 24 hours is two and a half hours. and there is only one time of day when those two and a half hours are available in the conditions that make them most potent — the ambrosial hours.

“of everything you have, give one-tenth to god. one thing you have straight from god is time — and one-tenth of 24-hours is about two hours and thirty minutes.” — yogi bhajan, november 19, 1984

this is not a religious obligation. it is an energetic investment. the returns are not metaphysical — they show up in your clarity, your health, your relationships, your ability to handle pressure. the person who consistently practices in the ambrosial hours for years is a fundamentally different organism than the person who doesn’t. not spiritually superior — physiologically, neurologically, energetically different.

———

the cold shower

yogi bhajan was consistent on this: the cold shower comes first. before sitting for meditation, you take a cold shower — not a warm shower that ends cold, but a full cold shower. you massage the body with your hands as the water runs cold, moving the capillaries, opening the circulation, stimulating the glands.

the cold water causes the blood to rush from the surface to the organs, flushing the capillary system. the glands secrete. the nervous system resets. you emerge awake — genuinely, physiologically awake — in a way that coffee cannot replicate. and then you sit.

the combination of cold water followed immediately by meditation in the ambrosial hours is one of the most powerful resets available to the human system. yogi bhajan taught it as essential, not optional. the cold shower prepares the body to receive the practice.

“at the ambrosial hour, after a cold shower, you sit down by yourself and conquer yourself. once you conquer yourself, you can conquer the whole world.” should I do this or that, go here or there, say yes or no — that consumes enormous energy and makes clear living impossible.

“whenever your mind will be in duality, you will be in trouble. there is no way you can function. if you can’t decide which way you are going to go, you are going to sit right there. that’s called duality. life is a gift of god, and duality is a waste of that life.” — yogi bhajan

the ambrosial hour practice clears the subconscious of the accumulated residue that feeds duality. when the tank is clean, the neutral mind functions. when the neutral mind functions, you move through your day with a decisiveness and a clarity that most people cannot access — not because they’re less intelligent, but because their system hasn’t been prepared.

———

what if you can’t do 3am

yogi bhajan also said this: meditating at any time of the day is a blessing. never forego meditating. the ambrosial hours are the ideal — but the practice done consistently at any time is vastly better than the ideal not done at all.

if your life does not allow 3:30am practice right now, start where you are. if you can only do 20 minutes before the family wakes up, do 20 minutes. if 6am is your pre-sunrise, practice at 6am. build the habit. let the habit build you. and as your commitment deepens, the rest of your life will reorganize itself around the practice — because that is what happens when you make it a true priority.

“first you make the habit, then the habit makes you.” — yogi bhajan

———

the nectar is real. the window is every morning.

the question is only whether you will be awake to receive it.

rise early. practice. ❤️‍🔥

sadhana

sadhana: the one thing

liv radha

sadhana: the one thing

there are a thousand things you could do for your spiritual development. yogi bhajan gave us one answer that covers all of them.

“how can you keep the tide in? how can you maintain your depth? i can tell you the answer in one word: sadhana.” — yogi bhajan, 1980

sadhana. daily spiritual practice. the same thing, every morning, before the world wakes up and before the ego has had a chance to talk you out of it. not because you’ll reach enlightenment by tuesday. not because it will feel good every time. but because it is the single most reliable technology for becoming who you actually are — and staying there.

———

what sadhana is

the word sadhana comes from the sanskrit root sadh — to go straight to the goal. it is not random spiritual activity. it is not doing yoga when you feel like it or meditating when life gets hard. it is a daily commitment to your own development, maintained with the regularity of eating and sleeping.

a sadhu is a being who has disciplined himself. sadhana is the technique of that discipline. it is a scientific way to live.

in the kundalini yoga tradition, sadhana is done in the ambrosial hours — before sunrise, ideally between 3:30 and 6:00am — when the earth’s electromagnetic field is at its most sattvic and the psychic channels are most open. it typically includes a cold shower, warm-up exercises, a kundalini yoga kriya, and a meditation. it is done every day. without exception.

“sadhana is everything we do on a daily basis as our self-discipline and our commitment to our higher self. it is a spiritual practice in which we confront the tendencies of our mind and ego and, out of love, we invite in the dimensions of our soul, spirit, and intuition.” — gurucharan singh khalsa, from the sadhana guidelines

———

what it’s not

sadhana is not a performance. it is not about doing it perfectly or feeling inspired or having a profound experience every morning. most mornings you will simply show up, do the practice, and go on with your day.

it is also not done for results in the way we usually think about results — as if you deposit a certain number of morning practices and then withdraw enlightenment. yogi bhajan was direct about this:

“it seems that on a daily basis, when you do sadhana, nothing happens. but you don’t do it out of greed. you do it to conquer your laziness, your ego, your stupidity, with your essence of commitment. that’s all sadhana is. we don’t do it to get anything.” — yogi bhajan, aquarian teacher

this reframe is important. sadhana is not a transaction. it is a confirmation — a daily renewal of your commitment to your own consciousness. yogi bhajan said it plainly: getting up in the morning to do your sadhana does not mean you will become god. getting up in the morning, you will become you.

———

what it actually does

over time — and the timeline is real, not instant — sadhana builds something in you that nothing else builds. a baseline. a floor that doesn’t fall out from under you when life gets hard. a reserves that don’t run dry.

“the greatest reward of doing sadhana is that the person becomes incapable of being defeated.” — yogi bhajan

incapable of being defeated. not because nothing difficult happens. but because the practice builds a self that can handle whatever comes — that has enough nervous system resilience, enough pranic charge, enough neutrality of mind that no external circumstance can fully take you down.

it also builds intuition. consistency in practice calibrates the subtle body, sharpens the arc line, and strengthens the neutral mind. over months and years of daily sadhana, your perception deepens. you start to know things before you can explain them. you make decisions that turn out to be correct. you navigate your life with an accuracy that feels uncanny to people who haven’t built this.

and it clears the subconscious. with every blink of the eye, 1,000 thoughts download into the crown chakra. the ones you don’t consciously process go into the subconscious as a holding tank. sadhana — particularly mantra-based meditation done consistently — clears this tank. it doesn’t examine the contents. it transcends them, installing new patterns at the level of the nervous system that operate automatically, before the conscious mind even gets involved.

“when a person gets up in the morning and does the sadhana, you know what accompanies that person? all the angels, all the saints and sages come to listen. their souls fly to those places to listen where god is chanted.” — yogi bhajan, 1977

———

the 40, 90, 120, 1000 day cycle

yogi bhajan gave us a precise framework for how long it takes the practice to work on different levels of the system:

40 days

breaks a habit. establishes a new pattern in the nervous system. the minimum unit of practice needed for a technique to begin to take root.

90 days

confirms the habit. the new pattern is installed in the subconscious and begins to operate automatically. you no longer have to think about it — it runs beneath the conscious level.

120 days

the habit becomes who you are. it is no longer a practice you do. it is a quality you embody. the new way of being has become the default.

1,000 days

mastery. the subtle body and radiant body are fully activated. the practice has become the practitioner. this is the classical prescription for developing the ninth and tenth bodies — the bodies of mastery and radiance.

“one part of sadhana should stay constant long enough for you to master, or at least experience, the changes evoked by a single technique. each kriya and mantra has its individual effects, although they all elevate you toward a cosmic consciousness. learn to value the pricelessness of one kriya, and all others will be understood in a clearer light.” — yogi bhajan, aquarian teacher

———

sadhana and the aquarian age

yogi bhajan taught that we are living in a time of unprecedented pressure on the human nervous system. the information age, the technological revolution, artificial intelligence — all of it is demanding more from the human psyche than has ever been demanded before. the old ways of coping are not enough.

sadhana is the answer. not as a retreat from the world — but as the preparation that makes it possible to move through the world without being consumed by it. you get up before the world starts, you reset your system, you fill your reserves — and then you go. whatever the day brings, you have something to draw from.

“getting up for sadhana in the morning is a totally selfish act — for personal strength, for personal intuition, for personal sharpness, for personal discipline, and overall for absolute personal prosperity.” — yogi bhajan

he called it selfish deliberately. because it is. not in the pejorative sense — but in the truest sense. it is the most direct investment you can make in yourself. everything else you do in your life will be better, cleaner, and more effective because of it.

———

when you don’t want to

yogi bhajan didn’t pretend this was easy. he was honest about what happens when you’re tired, when you got home late, when the bed is warm and the floor is cold and the last thing you want to do is sit and chant.

“when i am doing my sadhana, sleep sometimes wants to overtake me; i get tired. sometimes i get home late and i have to get up very early. then i do pranayam and i apply some yogic locks. i do a lot of things that i have learned and i go through it as gracefully as a humble human being should.” — yogi bhajan, 1978

the practice on the hard days is worth more than the practice on the easy ones. the radiant body is built in the moments where you chose to continue anyway. the discipline muscle grows when it meets resistance.

yogi bhajan also gave the simplest possible prescription for those mornings: cold water on the face. again and again, until you are awake. then begin.

———

sangat: practicing together

sadhana done alone is powerful. sadhana done in community — in sangat — is something else entirely.

“the isolation which can hit anybody and make them go totally crazy is defeated when you do sadhana in the sangat. and when all of you meditate on god, the total effect of your sadhana becomes multiplied by the number of people participating.” — yogi bhajan, 1981

the auric fields of practitioners in a shared space interact and amplify each other. the group holds a frequency that lifts everyone within it — including the person who showed up half-asleep and barely holding it together. this is why group sadhana, group class, and spiritual community are not optional extras. they are technologies for elevation that the individual practice alone cannot fully replicate.

———

there is nothing complicated about sadhana. you wake up. you practice. you repeat.

that’s it. that’s the whole thing.

done daily, over time, it will change everything — your health, your mind, your relationships, your capacity, your destiny.

not because of magic. because of accumulation. because the tide that you keep in, day after day, becomes an ocean.

rise early. practice. repeat. ❤️‍🔥

the nervous system & the glandular system

the nervous system & glandular system: your inner command center

liv radha

the nervous system & glandular system: your inner command center

most yoga works on the muscles. kundalini yoga works on something deeper.

the nervous system and the glandular system are the two master systems of the human body — the hardware through which consciousness communicates with matter. every thought you think, every emotion you feel, every response you have to the world around you runs through these two systems. and in the teachings of kundalini yoga, strengthening them is not a side effect of the practice. it is the primary goal.

“what is kundalini? the energy of the glandular system combines with the nervous system to become more sensitive so that the totality of the brain perceives signals and interprets them, so that the effect of the sequence of the cause becomes very clear to the man. in other words, man becomes totally, wholesomely aware.” — yogi bhajan

this is what the yoga of awareness actually means. not awareness as a concept — as a physiological reality. when the nervous system and glandular system are functioning at full capacity, you perceive more clearly, respond more accurately, and live with a caliber that simply isn’t available to a depleted system.

———

the nervous system

the nervous system is the communication network of the body — the vast, intricate web of nerves through which the brain sends and receives signals to and from every cell, every organ, every system. it governs your responses to everything: physical sensations, emotions, stress, pleasure, pain, fear, love.

yogi bhajan called the nervous system the key to human experience. and he was specific about this: the nervous system does not just react to the world — it shapes how the world is perceived. a strong, refined nervous system produces a person who can handle more, feel more, and process more — without breaking down. a weak or overstimulated nervous system produces someone who is reactive, easily overwhelmed, and operating in survival mode even when there is no threat.

in the aquarian age — this era of information overload, artificial intelligence, constant stimulation, and unprecedented pressure — the nervous system is under assault like never before in human history. yogi bhajan saw this coming decades ago and spoke about it with remarkable precision.

“we simply don’t have time to spend years in a cave. the teachings of kundalini yoga give us fast, efficient ways to increase our energy. in a couple of minutes we can generate enough energy in the system to keep us going for the whole day, and maintain mental stability and positive direction for the psyche.” — yogi bhajan

this is why the practice is built the way it is. not long, slow, gradual — but fast, precise, and effective. because the nervous system needs to be built to withstand the pressures of the times we are living in.

———

the sympathetic and parasympathetic

the autonomic nervous system — the part that operates beneath conscious control — has two branches: the sympathetic (fight or flight) and the parasympathetic (rest and digest). most people in modern life are chronically over-activated in the sympathetic — locked in a low-grade state of emergency that the body was only ever designed to sustain for brief periods.

chronic sympathetic dominance means: elevated cortisol, impaired digestion, shallow breathing, poor sleep, reduced immunity, and a mind that cannot settle. it is the physiological state underneath most modern anxiety, burnout, and chronic illness.

kundalini yoga works directly on this balance. specific pranayamas, bandhas, and kriyas shift the nervous system out of sympathetic dominance and into parasympathetic recovery. not gradually — immediately. three minutes of a specific breath pattern can measurably shift the state of the nervous system. this is not anecdotal. it is documented physiology.

“the link between you and god is the breath. be conscious of the total breath in all three forms. air must go all the way out on the exhale so that all the heart valves get equal pressure, and the brain and central nervous system will trigger survival systems for a few seconds.” — yogi bhajan

———

the glandular system

the glandular system — the endocrine system — is the chemical messaging network of the body. the glands produce hormones that regulate everything: mood, metabolism, immune function, reproductive health, stress response, sleep, energy, and the experience of spiritual states.

yogi bhajan called the glands the jewels of the body. when they are functioning optimally, the body produces what the kundalini teachings call ojas and tejas — the subtle essences that give the skin its luminosity, the eyes their brightness, and the presence its magnetism. these are not cosmetic qualities. they are the outward signs of an inwardly functioning system.

the glandular system is also directly linked to consciousness. the pituitary gland — the master gland, seated at the sixth chakra — regulates all the other glands and governs intuition, perception, and spiritual awareness. the pineal gland, seated at the crown, governs our relationship with light, with rhythm, and with states of consciousness beyond the ordinary.

“the glands are the guardians of health and the gatekeepers of consciousness.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

when the glands are imbalanced — through stress, poor diet, irregular sleep, or lack of practice — the entire system suffers. hormonal imbalance is not just a physical problem. it is a consciousness problem. it affects how clearly you think, how deeply you feel, how accurately you perceive.

———

how they work together

the nervous system and the glandular system are in constant communication. the nervous system sends signals to the glands; the glands release hormones that regulate the nervous system. they are a feedback loop — either a virtuous one, when both are strong and balanced, or a vicious one, when stress hormones keep the nervous system in overdrive, which demands more stress hormones, which keeps the nervous system in overdrive.

kundalini yoga intervenes in this loop at the level of the breath, the bandhas, and the specific angles of the kriyas. each of these is designed to stimulate specific glands, regulate specific nerve pathways, and produce specific hormonal and neurological effects. this is not improvised. the ancient rishis who developed these technologies researched the human body with the same precision that modern science brings to it — they simply approached it from the inside rather than the outside.

“the ancient yogis and sages who developed kundalini yoga had a deep respect for the creator of this human body. based on this respect, they sought knowledge of the totality of the human being. their research gave them a great understanding of the nervous system, glandular system, organ system, energy system and the brain.” — from the 3HO teachings

———

what depletes these systems

the list is not surprising, but it is worth saying plainly: chronic stress. irregular sleep. processed food and stimulants. alcohol and recreational substances. excessive screen time and information consumption. shallow breathing. a lack of any consistent physical or meditative practice.

each of these puts a draw on the nervous system and disrupts glandular secretion. individually, they are manageable. together, sustained over years, they produce a person who is running on reserves that are getting thinner — and who cannot understand why they feel so depleted when they’re doing everything right on the surface.

the depletion is in the hardware. and the hardware has to be rebuilt.

———

what rebuilds them

sadhana

a daily practice, maintained consistently, is the single most powerful thing you can do for both systems. the nervous system builds resilience through regular, sustained practice — not occasional intense effort. the glands are regulated through the rhythm of a consistent routine, particularly one that includes the ambrosial hours before sunrise.

cold showers

yogi bhajan was unequivocal about this: the cold shower is one of the most powerful tools available for rebuilding the nervous system. the cold water causes the capillaries to open and flush, the glands to secrete, and the nervous system to reset. two minutes under cold water in the morning will do more for your nervous system than most things you will do all day.

breath of fire

the rapid diaphragmatic breath of breath of fire directly stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands, clears the lungs, and rebuilds the nervous system through its rhythmic pressure on the navel point. three minutes daily produces measurable effects within forty days.

specific kriyas

yogi bhajan gave numerous kriyas specifically designed to strengthen the nervous and glandular systems — sets that work the spine, the navel, the thyroid, the adrenals, and the master glands. these are not generic exercise routines. they are precision instruments for specific systems.

white foods and sattvic diet

yogi bhajan taught that white foods — milk, yogurt, white radish, garlic, onion, almonds — are especially supportive of the glandular system. the sattvic diet in general — fresh, light, plant-based, free of stimulants — allows the glands to function without the additional burden of processing what doesn’t serve the system.

“do this meditation at lunchtime or any time you want to be sharper and have an edge over another person. it balances all the nervous energies and the glandular system to tune them to maximum efficiency. it can raise efficiency to the point of life over death. no need to take uppers and downers; the breath of life can balance you any time you want.” — yogi bhajan

———

you live inside your nervous system. your entire experience of reality is filtered through it. every perception, every emotion, every capacity you have — it all runs through this hardware.

build it. protect it. treat it as the most important infrastructure you have — because it is.

the practice is the maintenance. ❤️‍🔥

the seven chakras

the seven chakras: your seven friends

liv radha

the seven chakras: your seven friends

yogi bhajan didn’t talk about the chakras the way most people do — vortices of prana spinning at specific points along the spine, from the base to the crown. they are the intersections between the physical body and the energetic body, between matter and consciousness.

each chakra governs specific aspects of human experience: survival, creativity, will, love, truth, intuition, and transcendence. when they are open and balanced, energy flows freely through the system — and life flows. when they are blocked or imbalanced, the effects are felt everywhere: in the body, in the mind, in relationships, in finances, in how you show up in the world.

in kundalini yoga, the goal is not just to open the chakras but to raise the kundalini energy — coiled at the base of the spine — up through all seven, until it reaches the crown and merges with universal consciousness. this is the experience of liberation while still living in a body.

“kundalini is the energy that travels throughout your body via your chakra centers. when the energy is flowing freely, you experience health, vitality, and alignment with your highest self.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

———

first chakra — muladhara

root chakra. base of the spine. earth element. survival, security, foundation.

the first chakra is your foundation. it governs your relationship with the earth, with your body, with your most basic survival needs — food, shelter, safety. it is where the kundalini sleeps, coiled and waiting.

when it’s balanced: you feel safe. you are grounded in your body. you have the stability to build and sustain things in the physical world. you don’t operate from chronic fear.

when it’s blocked: anxiety. fear. a persistent feeling of being unsafe even when you’re not. difficulty with money, with physical health, with following through on anything. a restless inability to land anywhere.

“if you want to mess up somebody, go with the first chakra.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: root lock (mul bandh), squats, long walks, anything that connects you to the earth. cold showers. a consistent, grounded daily routine. the first chakra thrives on stability and rhythm.

———

second chakra — svadhisthana

sacral chakra. just below the navel. water element. creativity, sexuality, emotion.

the second chakra is the seat of creative and sexual energy — and these are not separate things. the same force that generates physical life generates art, music, ideas, and all forms of creative expression. it is the chakra of feeling, of flow, of relationship.

when it’s balanced: you are creative, emotionally fluid, capable of genuine intimacy. you feel. you create. you move through emotional experiences without being consumed by them.

when it’s blocked: emotional rigidity or excessive emotionality. creative blocks. difficulties in relationships. an unhealthy relationship with sexuality — either suppressed or compulsive.

“if you want to seduce somebody, go with the second chakra.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: frog pose, pelvic circles, anything that moves energy through the hips and lower abdomen. cold showers directly tone the second chakra. creative expression — writing, music, movement — feeds it.

———

third chakra — manipura

navel chakra. navel point. fire element. will, identity, personal power.

the third chakra is the power center — the seat of will, self-esteem, and personal identity. it is the fire in the belly. the navel point is the physical seat of this chakra, and in kundalini yoga it is treated as the most important center in the body — the reserve pool from which the kundalini awakens.

when it’s balanced: you have genuine personal power — not aggression, but directed, purposeful will. you complete what you start. you can say yes and no clearly, from a place of self-knowing rather than fear or people-pleasing.

when it’s blocked: anger. powerlessness. a tendency to control or to be controlled. digestive issues. shame. the inability to act decisively or to see things through.

“in life the third chakra is yes and no. high and low is balanced at the third chakra. it is a point of pure energy.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: stretch pose, breath of fire, sat kriya, bow pose. anything that fires the navel. the third chakra is the most worked chakra in kundalini yoga because everything runs through it.

———

fourth chakra — anahata

heart chakra. center of the chest. air element. love, compassion, forgiveness.

the heart chakra is the pivot point of the entire system — three chakras below, three above, and the heart at the center. it is where the earthly and the divine meet. it is the shift from ‘me’ to ‘we.’ from personal will to universal love.

when it’s balanced: genuine compassion. the ability to love without losing yourself. forgiveness that isn’t performance. an open, expansive quality in your presence that others feel immediately.

when it’s blocked: grief. resentment. emotional armor. the inability to receive love, even when it’s being offered. a compensatory self-sufficiency that keeps everyone at arm’s length.

“if you want to uplift somebody, go with the fourth chakra.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: camel pose, heart-opening backbends, green foods, loving-kindness meditation. the fourth chakra also responds deeply to music — particularly naad yoga and devotional chanting, which vibrate the heart center directly.

———

fifth chakra — vishuddha

throat chakra. throat. ether element. truth, communication, commitment.

the fifth chakra is the gateway to commitment — this is yogi bhajan’s specific emphasis, and it is not what most people expect. yes, it governs communication and self-expression. but more fundamentally, it governs the relationship between your word and your reality. what you say, you become. what you commit to, you create.

this is also the chakra of miri-piri — the balance of the earthly and the spiritual, the practical and the divine. the fifth chakra is where these two rivers meet in sound.

when it’s balanced: you speak truth — not harshly, but clearly. you keep your word. your communication has weight because it is aligned with your soul. you are able to commit and to follow through.

when it’s blocked: inability to speak up. speaking too much, or from the wrong place. broken commitments. throat tension, thyroid issues. the persistent feeling that you are not being heard or understood.

“if you want to be blunt, go by the fifth chakra.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: neck rolls, shoulder stands, chanting — especially long, sustained tones. mantra is the direct technology of the fifth chakra. the sound current purifies and opens this center faster than anything else.

———

sixth chakra — ajna

third eye. brow point. command center. intuition, perception, wisdom.

the sixth chakra is the command center — the seat of the master, the place from which the entire human system is directed. it governs the pituitary gland, which regulates the entire glandular and nervous system. it is the seat of intuition, of projection, of the arc line.

when it’s balanced: intuition is reliable and clear. you see through situations quickly. you make decisions from a place of inner knowing rather than external pressure. you have the capacity to command — yourself first, and by extension, everything else.

when it’s blocked: confusion. inability to concentrate. headaches. a disconnection from your own inner knowing. susceptibility to other people’s realities because you can’t access your own.

“if you want to command somebody and take the responsibility, and see it is done and delivered, then go by the sixth chakra.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: trataka (fixed gaze meditation), kirtan kriya, any meditation that focuses at the brow point. the sixth chakra is activated by the practice of projection — by clearly directing the mind toward an intention and holding it there.

———

seventh chakra — sahasrara

crown chakra. top of the head. pure consciousness. transcendence, union, grace.

the seventh chakra is where the individual soul meets the universal soul. it is the lotus of a thousand petals — the symbol of infinite expansion, infinite consciousness, the end of separation. when the kundalini reaches the crown, the yogi experiences samadhi: the merging of the individual into the infinite.

in daily life, a balanced crown chakra doesn’t mean you’re walking around in a permanent trance. it means you have access to a quality of awareness that is larger than your personal story — a perspective from which you can see the whole, rather than just your corner of it.

when it’s balanced: spiritual connection that is lived, not performed. a sense of meaning and purpose that doesn’t depend on external circumstances. the experience of grace — of something larger moving through you and through your life.

when it’s blocked: spiritual disconnection. nihilism. the sense that nothing matters or that everything is meaningless. extreme over-intellectualization as a substitute for genuine knowing.

“if you want to just get rid of somebody — “I see the light in you better than me. God bless you, you are wonderful.” that is the seventh chakra.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: meditation. sadhana. the practice of seeing the divine in all things. the seventh chakra is not built through a specific posture or technique — it is the fruit of a sustained, devoted practice. it opens when all the others are in alignment and the energy has nowhere else to go.

———

the kundalini and the chakras

kundalini is described as a serpent of energy coiled three and a half times at the base of the spine. it is not dormant in the way a sleeping person is dormant — it is latent, like a compressed spring. the practice of kundalini yoga is the technology for awakening this energy and guiding it upward through all seven chakras.

as the kundalini rises through each chakra, it activates and clears that center. the blocks, the traumas, the habitual patterns stored there — the energy moves through them, transforms them, and the chakra opens. this is why kundalini yoga can produce rapid and profound shifts: you are not just stretching or relaxing. you are working on the energetic architecture of your consciousness.

disease enters through the energy bodies before it reaches the physical. blocked chakras create the conditions for physical illness, emotional dysfunction, and mental confusion — long before any of it becomes visible. clearing and strengthening the chakras is preventive medicine at the most fundamental level.

“kundalini yoga raises the complete body awareness to prepare the body, nervous system, and mind to handle the energy of kundalini rising.” — from the aquarian teacher training manual

———

communicating from the chakras

one of yogi bhajan’s most practical teachings on the chakras was about communication. every time you speak, you are speaking from a chakra. and the chakra you speak from determines what is received — and what is possible.

first chakra communication eliminates. second seduces. third balances. fourth uplifts. fifth delivers truth. sixth commands. seventh dissolves.

you can even combine chakras — up to three at a time — to produce specific qualities of communication. the point is that it is not random. you can learn to choose. and when you can choose where you’re speaking from, you can change everything about how you move through the world.

“in your own life, all creativity has to create a harmonious note. you must combine your chakras harmoniously. if you create an unharmonious note, that’s when you miss the point.” — yogi bhajan

———

seven centers. seven friends. seven doors into a more conscious, more vibrant, more fully lived life.

the practice opens them. ❤️‍🔥

the radiant body

the radiant body: spiritual royalty

liv radha

the radiant body: spiritual royalty

you’ve been in a room with someone who has it. you felt it before you saw it. before they said a word. before you knew anything about them.

that is the radiant body.

“you have ten bodies but your radiant body solidly affects and acts within a twenty-five mile radius.” — yogi bhajan

the radiant body is the tenth body in the ten-body system of kundalini yoga — and it is the final one before the eleventh, which is embodiment itself. it is the body of courage, magnetism, and spiritual nobility. it is what yogi bhajan called the soul body plus your radiance — the first body elevated to its fullest, most luminous expression.

it is not charm. it is not confidence. it is not charisma in the social sense. it is something far more fundamental: the radiation of a soul that has committed fully to its own truth.

———

key phrase: all or nothing

this is the nature of the radiant body — and it is not negotiable.

the radiant body does not build through partial effort. it does not reward halfway. it is the body that responds directly to commitment — to showing up completely, to keeping your word, to doing the practice on the days you don’t feel like it, to following through when everything in you wants to fold.

this is also why it is the most visible of the ten bodies to others. people with a strong radiant body are recognized immediately — not necessarily as spiritual practitioners, but as people of exceptional presence and authority. they don’t have to announce themselves. the field announces them.

“let us not be like mummies, all wrapped up — ancient souls wrapped in the cloth of thoughts and the wax of ego. you are destined to become masters, and you are master of your good luck, your best self and your radiant body.” — yogi bhajan

———

what the radiant body does

the radiant body is your magnetic field writ large. where the auric body protects you and holds your energy in, the radiant body broadcasts — it sends a signal out into the world that precedes you everywhere you go. that signal is composed of your commitments, your courage, your consistency, and the accumulated luminosity of your practice.

yogi bhajan said it operates within a twenty-five mile radius. this is not hyperbole. a fully developed radiant body changes the field of an entire room — an entire city block — without any deliberate effort from the person carrying it. they simply exist, and the energy of that existence moves outward.

it also provides a kind of invincibility — not in a naive sense, but in the sense that obstacles no longer stop you. they may slow you down. they may require navigation. but they do not end you. there is a momentum, a forward force, that cannot be easily blocked when the radiant body is strong.

“when the radiant body is fully awakened, no one can deny you, no problem can stop you. you shall prevail.” — yogi bhajan

———

when it’s strong

courage in the face of anything. not the absence of fear — the presence of enough light that fear cannot dominate. you walk into difficult situations and you hold your ground, not through aggression, but through the sheer authority of your field.

nobility. an innate sense of dignity — in yourself, and an instinctive recognition of it in others. people with a strong radiant body treat everyone with a kind of royalty, because they have found it in themselves.

attraction without effort. good things come to you. opportunities, people, resources — they are drawn into your field. this is not luck. it is magnetism. the radiant body is the mechanism through which the law of attraction actually operates — not as positive thinking, but as energetic reality.

you exceed expectations. consistently. not because you’re performing, but because the radiant body operates at full capacity and nothing less is possible when it’s running.

———

when it’s weak

fear of being seen. this is the central wound of a weak radiant body. you shrink. you avoid conflict not because you’ve chosen peace, but because exposure feels dangerous. you hold back the fullness of what you are — and then wonder why life feels muted.

fear of commitment. the radiant body is built on follow-through, so a weak radiant body creates a person who starts things and doesn’t finish them, who makes promises they don’t keep, who hedges everything. this isn’t moral failure. it is a symptom of a body that hasn’t been trained.

invisibility as a default. you walk into rooms and people don’t register you. not because you have nothing to offer — but because the signal isn’t broadcasting. the field is too contracted to be felt.

“if you are afraid of yourself, you cannot be true to yourself. if you cannot be true to yourself, you cannot be noble. if you cannot be noble, you cannot serve.” — yogi bhajan

———

how to strengthen it

commitment — to anything

the radiant body responds to commitment above all else. what you commit to matters less than the act of committing fully and following through. a 40-day practice, kept without interruption. a promise made and kept. showing up when it would be easier not to. every act of genuine follow-through deposits directly into the radiant body.

1,000 days

this is the classical prescription for the radiant body — and for the subtle body as well. one thousand consecutive days of sadhana ignites both. it is the ultimate act of commitment, and the radiant body is built for exactly this.

keep your hair

yogi bhajan taught that the hair is directly connected to the radiant body. it is an extension of the electromagnetic field — an antenna for pranic energy. keeping the hair uncut and keeping it covered during sadhana amplifies the radiant body significantly. this is the teaching. what you do with it is your choice.

be seen

the radiant body grows through use. put yourself in situations where you have to show up fully — to teach, to lead, to speak, to serve. every time you choose full presence over hiding, the radiant body gets stronger.

courage practice

do one thing every day that scares you. not recklessly — but deliberately. the radiant body is the courage body. it grows in the direction you’re afraid to go.

“whenever you feel that you’re not getting somewhere — expand your radiance. your job is to radiate. your destiny is to shine.” — yogi bhajan

———

the tenth body and the soul body

yogi bhajan called the radiant body the soul body plus radiance — the first body (the soul, pure and infinite) brought into its fullest earthly expression. this is significant.

the soul body is what you are at your core — the piece of the infinite inside the finite form. the radiant body is what it looks like when that core is allowed to fully express. when you stop hiding, stop hedging, stop managing how much of yourself you let the world see — when you commit fully to your own truth and live it out loud — the radiant body ignites.

it is the body of the saint made visible. the body of the master in action. the body that every other body has been building toward.

“you are here to uplift. that is your destiny. your radiance is not for you — it is your gift to the world.” — yogi bhajan

———

spiritual royalty is not a title you receive. it is a state you build — one committed day at a time.

show up. keep your word. let yourself be seen.

the radiant body is already inside you. it is waiting for you to stop holding back. ❤️‍🔥

the subtle body

the subtle body: mastery or mystery

liv radha

the subtle body: mastery or mystery

of all the ten bodies, the subtle body is the hardest to pin down. which is exactly the point.

the subtle body is the ninth body in the ten-body system of kundalini yoga — and it is the one that operates entirely in the space beyond what the ordinary senses can detect. it is the body of the invisible, the body of mastery, the body that sees the whole picture while everyone else is still reacting to the surface.

“where there is mastery, there is no mystery.” — yogi bhajan

this is the guiding phrase of the ninth body — and it cuts both ways. when the subtle body is strong, nothing surprises you. not because nothing happens, but because you can read what’s coming before it arrives. the mystery collapses into mastery. you see the play of the cosmos in every seemingly ordinary event, and you move through life with the calm of someone who knows.

———

what the subtle body is

the subtle body is the energetic field that connects your individual consciousness to the subtle reality underlying all of creation. it is the body through which you perceive what cannot be seen — the undercurrents of a situation, the truth beneath the words, the long arc of cause and effect before it becomes visible.

it lives at the intersection of your soul body and your consciousness. it is the vehicle through which the soul body communicates its knowing — and it is also the vehicle the soul rides at the time of death. when the physical body drops, all the other bodies dissolve back into their respective elements. the subtle body alone carries the soul through the transition, navigating the layers of blue ether on its journey toward the infinite.

great teachers — yogi bhajan, guru nanak, the saints and masters of all lineages — continue to reach their students through the subtle body long after they have left the physical plane. the subtle body does not die with the physical. it is one of the bodies that continues.

“understanding the nature of the subtle body gave us the thought about the nature of the tantric energy. the beauty of white tantric yoga is that it is subtle, it is exalting, and it works to give you the mastery of life.” — yogi bhajan

———

key phrase: mastery or mystery

this is the choice the ninth body presents you with in every moment.

mystery is where most people live — in the reactive, surface-level experience of life, where things seem to happen at random and other people’s behavior is endlessly confusing and your own patterns are opaque to you. it is the experience of being swept along by currents you can’t see.

mastery is the other option. not control — mastery. the difference is significant. mastery doesn’t mean forcing outcomes. it means perceiving deeply enough that you can move with the subtle currents rather than being caught off guard by them. it means understanding the consequences of actions before they play out. it means refinement — of speech, of thought, of behavior — such that everything you do lands with precision and grace.

the subtle body is built through exactly this: refinement. years of practice. the willingness to go deeper, to look closer, to respond rather than react.

———

when it’s strong

calmness. this is the primary quality — a deep, unshakeable calmness that is not detachment or suppression but genuine clarity. nothing is surprising. you read people and situations accurately. you learn quickly because you perceive the essence of things rather than getting lost in their complexity.

long-term thinking. the subtle body sees consequences — not just immediately, but across time. people with a strong ninth body instinctively consider the downstream effects of their actions. they don’t just think about what something will do now; they feel into what it will generate across months, years, lifetimes.

intuition as navigation. not occasional hunches but a consistent, reliable sense of the invisible field — what a situation actually is, what a person actually means, what the next right move is. the subtle body is the body through which true psychic capacity operates, when it exists.

“your subtle body is attuned to the subtle energy around us that is behind the external and superficial reality. all of your power comes from this subtle, infinite energy.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

———

when it’s weak

naivety. the inability to read beneath the surface. you take things at face value when you shouldn’t. you miss what’s actually happening. you walk into situations that a more developed subtle body would have flagged immediately.

unintentional crudeness. when the subtle body is undeveloped, speech and behavior tend toward bluntness — not malicious, but lacking in finesse. you say too much, or too little, or the wrong thing at the wrong moment. subtlety in communication is a direct reflection of the subtle body.

restlessness. the feeling that you’re missing something, that life has a dimension you can’t quite access. frustration that you’re not understood. a sense that you’re always reacting rather than leading.

———

how to strengthen it

1,000 days

this is the classical prescription — and it is not an exaggeration or a metaphor. one thousand consecutive days of a committed spiritual practice. sadhana every morning, without interruption. this kind of sustained, unbroken commitment is the specific condition that develops the subtle body, because the subtle body responds to consistency, depth, and refinement over time. it cannot be rushed. it is built the way mastery is always built: through showing up, day after day, until the invisible becomes visible.

refinement

subtlety in action, in speech, in thought. the subtle body is fed by quality — by choosing the finer thing, the more considered response, the more graceful way of being. this is not perfectionism. it is the practice of bringing awareness and care to the details of how you move through the world.

white tantric yoga

yogi bhajan’s white tantric yoga works directly on the subtle body — burning karmic patterns held in the subconscious and refining the energetic field at the deepest level. yogi bhajan was the mahan tantric — the master of white tantric yoga — and this technology was one of the most powerful tools he offered for developing the ninth body.

meditation on the unseen

any meditation that cultivates perception beyond the physical senses feeds the subtle body. long, deep meditations. silent sadhana. practices that develop the ability to sit with what cannot be immediately grasped and trust that understanding will come.

“the spirit and the subtle body are very much related — they never leave each other. so anything which is refined — refined art, refined acts, refined speech, anything which is not gross — will put you nearer to the soul.” — yogi bhajan

———

the subtle body and death

this is where the teaching becomes most profound. at the moment of death, the subtle body does not dissolve. it is the vehicle — the only vehicle — that carries the soul through the transition.

everything else returns to its source: the physical body to the earth, the pranic body to the universal prana, the aura to the light. but the subtle body wraps around the soul and carries it through the blue ethers, navigating the realms of consciousness that exist beyond the electromagnetic field of the earth.

which means: the subtle body you build in this lifetime is the one that carries you across. the practice you put in now, the refinement you cultivate, the mastery you develop — it travels with you.

this is not a small thing to understand.

“relate to the mastery of the technologies of consciousness rather than the mystery of consciousness.” — yogi bhajan

———

the choice is always mastery or mystery. always.

choose mastery. build it daily. refine everything. ❤️‍🔥

the pranic body

the pranic body: the breath of life

liv radha

the pranic body: the breath of life

every breath you take is not just oxygen. it is life force.

prana — from the sanskrit, meaning primary energy — is the electromagnetic force that rides on the air we breathe and animates everything it touches. it is not a mystical concept awaiting scientific discovery. it is the electromagnetic flux of the air interacting with your own internal electromagnetic field. it is measurable. it is real. and it is the difference between a living body and a dead one.

“prana is what comes in your life through the breath. we call it a breath of life.” — yogi bhajan

the pranic body is the eighth body in the ten-body system of kundalini yoga. it is the body that governs how much life force you are able to take in, hold, and circulate — and its strength or weakness shows up in every single area of your life.

———

what the pranic body is

the pranic body is the energetic circuit through which prana flows. it encompasses the nadis — the subtle energy channels that run through the body like a river system, carrying life force to every cell, every organ, every system. when this circuit is clear and strong, prana moves freely. when it’s blocked or depleted, things start to break down.

air is not prana. air is the medium for prana. the lungs extract both oxygen (which purifies the blood) and prana (which gives life). most people breathe shallowly, extracting only a fraction of the prana available to them in every breath. this is not a small thing. it is the single most consistent drain on human vitality.

the pranic body also governs the time of death. when it is our time to leave the physical body, it is the relationship between the pranic body and the physical body that ends. the breath stops because the pranic body releases its connection — not the other way around.

“the purpose of giving you the prana, the breath of life, is so that you can use each prana innocently to be pure.” — yogi bhajan

———

key phrase: finite to infinite

this is the guiding phrase of the pranic body, and it captures the entire teaching. we have a finite lifespan — a finite number of breaths. but prana itself is infinite. it is the energy of the universe moving through you.

every breath is a transaction with the infinite. you are, with every inhale, pulling universal energy into your personal field. with every exhale, releasing what no longer serves. this is not metaphor. this is the literal mechanics of how the pranic body works.

when the pranic body is strong, you live as a channel for this infinite energy. you don’t run out. you don’t deplete. you regenerate from the inside, fed by something that has no bottom.

———

when it’s strong

fearlessness. this is the primary quality of a strong pranic body — and it is not the absence of fear, but the presence of so much life force that fear simply has no purchase. you are too alive to be afraid.

high vitality. natural healing ability. the capacity to hold polarities without collapsing — light and dark, masculine and feminine, action and rest — because you have enough energy to contain both without being destabilized by either.

self-motivation. when the pranic body is strong, you don’t need external stimulation to get moving. the energy is already there, already circulating, already available. you wake up ready.

———

when it’s weak

fear. chronic, low-level, sourceless anxiety. the kind that doesn’t have a clear object — it’s just there, underneath everything, making the world feel threatening and your reserves feel thin.

fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix. reaching for external stimulants — caffeine, sugar, screens, other people’s energy — because your own supply feels insufficient. a persistent sense of depletion.

illness. yogi bhajan was direct: disease enters through the energy bodies before it reaches the physical. a chronically depleted pranic body is the fertile ground in which physical illness takes root.

“a weak pranic body may manifest as low levels of vitality, fatigue, stress, anxiety, fear, illness, and depression. a strong pranic body gives you energy, vitality, fearlessness, prosperity, and natural healing talents.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

what depletes the pranic body: shallow breathing, poor sleep, processed food, alcohol, excessive stimulation, environments without natural light or air. every one of these creates a drain on the circuit.

———

breath and the pranic body

the breath is the most direct access point to the pranic body — which is why pranayama is not optional in this practice. it is the maintenance of the primary system.

when you hold the breath out — fully exhaled — the pranic body responds immediately. the electromagnetic force that normally flows in through the lungs stops. the pranic body wakes up, adjusts, realigns its connection with the physical body. you may feel the kundalini move, or energy at the third eye. this is the pranic body communicating: not yet. it’s not time. inhale.

this is also why rest between exercises in a kriya is not laziness — it is the pranic body integrating what just happened. the practice does not end with the posture. it continues in the stillness after.

“one simple pranayam: take three long, slow, deep breaths every 31 minutes. even if you’ve done sadhana and set yourself for the day — the mind will pull you off center. three deep breaths will bring you back.” — yogi bhajan

———

how to strengthen it

breath of fire

the most direct and powerful tool for building the pranic body. the rapid, rhythmic breath that fires from the navel pumps prana through the nadis at high speed, clearing blockages and building charge in the entire system. three minutes daily produces noticeable results.

long deep breathing

the slow, complete breath — filling from the belly up through the chest — maximizes the amount of prana extracted from each breath. most people use only the top third of their lung capacity. long deep breathing reverses this and feeds the pranic body fully with every cycle.

angles and triangles

kundalini yoga postures are specifically designed to create geometric angles with the body that draw prana in. the body becomes an antenna. this is not accidental — it is precise technology for charging the pranic body through posture.

lifestyle

fresh food, clean water, natural environments, sufficient sleep, moving your body — all of these feed the pranic body. the habits that deplete it are equally clear: alcohol, processed food, shallow breathing, chronic stress, excessive screen time. you already know. the pranic body knows too.

“self-reliance will vanish all fear. fear comes when you are dependent on anything other than your own inner wisdom and higher self. if your self-reliance is strong, you are protected.” — yogi bhajan

———

every breath is a choice. every inhale is an opportunity to take in more life, more force, more of what animates you.

breathe consciously. build the circuit. feed the fire. ❤️‍🔥

the five tattvas

the five tattvas: you are made of the universe

liv radha

the five tattvas: you are made of the universe

before you were a body, you were a configuration of elements.

the ancient rishis — — yogi bhajan, aquarian teacher training manual

———

what the tattvas are

the five tattvas are the building blocks of the manifest world. they emerge from consciousness itself — from the most subtle to the most dense, each one containing the ones that came before it.

ether is first — pure space, pure potential, pure consciousness. from ether comes air — movement, breath, the beginning of form. from air comes fire — transformation, heat, direction. from fire comes water — flow, feeling, nourishment. from water comes earth — the densest form, solidity, structure, the body itself.

they are not separate forces. they are interwoven — each modifying and sustaining the others. the subtler tattvas (ether and air) give lightness and consciousness to the denser ones. the denser tattvas (water and earth) give the subtle ones a place to land, to operate, to become real in the world.

“the essence of life is both created and maintained by the tattvas. these aspects make up the entirety of the universe — including the human being.”

———

akasha — the ether tattva

element: space. chakra: fifth (throat). sense: hearing. shadow quality: pride.

ether is the container in which everything else exists. it is pure, infinite space — not empty, but full of potential. it is the medium through which sound travels, which is why the throat chakra — the center of communication, truth, and the sound current — is its home.

in the body: the spaces within — between cells, between bones, within the lungs, the sinuses, the hollow channels through which prana moves.

in the mind: the capacity for expansive thinking, for vision, for understanding beyond the limits of the ordinary mind. when ether is balanced, you have perspective. you can hold complexity without collapsing. you feel connected to something larger than yourself.

when it’s out of balance: pride. disconnection. the inability to listen — to yourself or to others. an itching, restless quality that has no clear source. you feel ungrounded, untethered, scattered.

“when ether is out of balance you want to scratch.” — yogi bhajan

to balance it: mantra. chanting and the sound current directly work the ether element. the vibration of sound in the space of the throat, skull, and chest clears and activates the akasha tattva like nothing else.

———

vayu — the air tattva

element: air. chakra: fourth (heart). sense: touch. shadow quality: attachment.

air is movement — breath, wind, the animating force that makes things alive. it is the bridge between the inner world and the outer world. every breath you take is an exchange with the universe — you are literally made of the air around you.

in the body: the lungs, the breath, the nervous system, circulation. every movement of prana through the energetic body is governed by vayu.

in the mind: flexibility, adaptability, the capacity for change. when air is balanced, you move through life with ease — you’re not rigidly attached to outcomes, you trust the flow, you can let go when it’s time.

when it’s out of balance: anxiety, restlessness, attachment. the mind races. you cling. you over-analyze. there is a persistent low-level panic that has no clear cause — this is vayu imbalance running through the nervous system.

“when air is out of balance, attachment rules. you hold on to what was, to what should be, and you cannot be present to what is.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

to balance it: pranayama. breathing exercises directly regulate the vayu tattva. long deep breathing calms excess air. breath of fire builds and moves it. alternate nostril breathing balances and stabilizes it.

———

agni — the fire tattva

element: fire. chakra: third (navel). sense: sight. shadow quality: anger.

fire is transformation. it takes what exists and converts it into something else — food into energy, raw ore into metal, confusion into clarity. it is the force of the kundalini itself. it is what makes things happen.

in the body: digestion, metabolism, body temperature, the immune system’s ability to burn off what doesn’t belong. the navel point — the seat of the third chakra — is the physical center of this fire.

in the mind: will, determination, courage, the drive to act. when fire is balanced, you have genuine personal power — not aggression, but directed, purposeful force. you can command a room without raising your voice.

when it’s out of balance: anger. the same force that is meant to purify turns outward and burns. you fight — with people, with circumstances, with yourself.

“you all want to get rid of your anger. get rid of your anger and you won’t be able to digest your food. anger was meant for self-purification. it was not meant to burn others.” — yogi bhajan

to balance it: navel work. sat kriya. breath of fire. anything that strengthens the navel center transforms the raw fire of agni into directed, purposeful energy rather than reactive combustion.

———

jala — the water tattva

element: water. chakra: second (sacral). sense: taste. shadow quality: lust.

water is the element of flow, feeling, creativity, and connection. it is what makes the body fluid, what carries nutrients to cells, what allows emotions to move through rather than getting stuck. the body is roughly 70% water — which tells you something about how central this element is to human life.

in the body: blood, lymph, saliva, sexual fluids — all the waters of the physical body. the kidneys, bladder, and reproductive organs are governed by this tattva.

in the mind: emotional intelligence, empathy, the capacity for deep relationship. when water is balanced, you feel. you connect. you create — from the second chakra, which governs both physical and creative generation.

when it’s out of balance: moodiness. emotional reactivity. lust in its many forms — the compulsive craving for sensation, for merger, for something outside yourself to fill what feels empty inside.

“when water is out of balance you are moody.” — yogi bhajan

to balance it: forward folds, frog pose, pelvic floor work, any kriya that moves energy through the second chakra. cold showers — a cornerstone of the kundalini lifestyle — directly balance the water element, tonify the nervous system, and move stagnant energy out of the second chakra.

———

prithvi — the earth tattva

element: earth. chakra: first (root). sense: smell. shadow quality: greed.

earth is the densest, most stable element. it is what gives things form — bones, muscles, ligaments, the physical structure that allows consciousness to exist in a body. it is the foundation on which everything else rests.

in the body: bones, teeth, hair, nails, all solid tissue. the skeletal structure is earth tattva in its most literal form.

in the mind: groundedness, stability, patience, presence. when earth is balanced, you feel safe in your body and in the world. you are rooted. you don’t get swept away by every wind that blows through.

when it’s out of balance: denial and greed. when you don’t feel safe, you grasp — for security, for more, for certainty in a world that doesn’t offer it. when earth is deficient, you feel perpetually unsettled, unable to land, unable to be present.

“when earth is out of balance you live in denial.” — yogi bhajan

to balance it: root lock (mul bandh), root chakra kriyas, grounding practices, time in nature. walking barefoot on actual earth. the root is the foundation — if this tattva is unstable, everything built above it will wobble.

———

the tattvas in balance

yogi bhajan gave us a simple, precise picture of what balance looks like:

“when the five tattvas are in balance you are virtuous, smiling, powerful and attractive.” — yogi bhajan

virtuous. smiling. powerful. attractive. not complicated. not requiring years of analysis. the balanced human being — whose elements are harmonized and flowing — simply has these qualities naturally. they emanate from the system when it’s working.

and he gave us a precise picture of what imbalance looks like: fire out of balance, you fight. ether out of balance, you scratch. water out of balance, you’re moody. earth out of balance, you live in denial. air out of balance, you attach.

look at your life right now. where are you fighting? where are you moody? where are you clinging? where are you in denial? the tattva map will tell you exactly where the imbalance is — and point you directly to the practice that restores it.

———

the tattvas and the chakras

each of the first five chakras corresponds to one of the five tattvas — and each chakra carries both the gifts and the shadow of its element. this is why kundalini yoga works on the chakras so systematically: balancing a chakra is balancing its corresponding tattva, which is balancing the element both in the body and in the consciousness.

the sixth and seventh chakras — the third eye and the crown — correspond to the mind and to pure consciousness, beyond the five elements. as the kundalini rises through the lower five chakras and their tattvas, it ultimately transcends the elemental world entirely.

this is the arc of the practice. from earth — dense, grounded, physical — all the way to the crown, where individual consciousness merges with the infinite. the tattvas are not obstacles on this journey. they are the path.

“one of the goals of yoga is to balance and integrate all five elements of our being. all sadhana, meditation, and yoga consists of different processes to purify these elements, aiding their flow and transformation.” — from the teachings of kundalini yoga

———

sa ta na ma — the mantra of the tattvas

yogi bhajan gave us a mantra that contains all five tattvas within its very sound structure.

SA TA NA MA

these five primal sounds — sa, ta, na, ma, and the a sound that runs through all of them — are called the pancha shabd, the five sounds of the universe. each syllable carries a specific vibratory quality that corresponds to a stage of the cosmic cycle: infinity, life, death, rebirth.

and the a sound — present in every syllable, the thread that holds them all together — is ether. akasha. pure space. the container in which all of creation moves.

sa-a. ta-a. na-a. ma-a. every time you chant this mantra, you are sounding all five elements. you are vibrating the entire tattva spectrum within your own body — rebalancing, recalibrating, returning to the original frequency of creation.

“sa ta na ma is the most important mantra in kundalini yoga. it is the nuclear form of sat nam. chanting it rewires the brain, balances the hemispheres, and takes you back to your origin.” — yogi bhajan

———

you are not just a physical body moving through a physical world. you are a living intersection of five cosmic forces — the same forces that built the stars, the oceans, the mountains, and the wind.

when those forces are balanced within you, you are in harmony with the universe. and the universe responds in kind.

that is what the practice is building. ❤️‍🔥

the three gunas

the three gunas: the forces running your life

liv radha

the three gunas: the forces running your life

everything in creation is made of three qualities. not metaphorically — these are the three qualities of nature. they bind the soul.” — bhagavad gita 14:5

the word guna means strand, or quality — like three threads woven together into a single rope. you cannot separate them. you cannot have pure sattva without rajas and tamas. they are always operating together, always shifting, with one dominant at any given moment.

what changes — what you can change — is which one is running the show.

———

what the gunas are

the gunas are not just a philosophical concept. they are the actual qualities of your mind, your body, your food, your environment, your time of day, your state of consciousness. everything in the manifest world can be understood through them.

they describe the state you’re in right now. they explain why you feel one way in the morning and another way at night. they reveal why certain foods make you heavy and others make you clear. they show you, with precision, why you’re stuck — and exactly how to move.

“rajas transforms tamas to sattva, and sattva to tamas. the three qualities of the gunas intermingle, combine and contrast constantly.” — from the teachings of yogi bhajan

———

tamas — the quality of inertia

tamas is the principle of stability, heaviness, and darkness. at its most basic level, it is what makes solid things solid. it is the quality of the earth — dense, grounded, resistant to change.

in the body: heaviness, sluggishness, the inability to move. you wake up groggy and can’t shake it. you feel dense, unmotivated, stuck.

in the mind: confusion, delusion, ignorance. the inability to discriminate between what is real and what is not. the tendency to cling — to situations, to people, to the past — even when it’s clearly not serving you.

in its extreme: depression, addiction, total inertia. the feeling that nothing will ever change. darkness without any visible way out.

tamas is also, paradoxically, necessary. without tamas, nothing would hold its form. the body itself requires tamas to maintain its structure. the problem is not tamas — the problem is excess tamas, or tamas in the wrong place.

“tamas guna, which is born of ignorance, is the cause of illusion for the embodied souls. it deludes all living beings through negligence, laziness, and sleep.” — bhagavad gita 14:8

tamasic foods: meat, alcohol, processed foods, anything stale, overripe, or excessively heavy. tamasic environments: excessive sleep, isolation, environments without light or movement.

———

rajas — the quality of action

rajas is movement, passion, desire, fire. it is what gets you out of bed, what drives ambition, what makes things happen. it is creative, active, transformative.

in the body: heat, energy, the drive to act. you feel motivated, charged, ready to move.

in the mind: ambition, restlessness, desire. the rajasic mind is always reaching — for the next thing, the next accomplishment, the next sensation. it cannot rest because rest feels like death to it.

in its excess: agitation, anger, obsession, burnout. the mind becomes scattered, attached to outcomes, hijacked by craving. you’re moving constantly but not necessarily in the right direction.

rajas is the force that transforms tamas. you cannot move from heaviness to clarity without first moving through action. this is why the practice begins with movement — breath, kriya, physical postures — before sitting for meditation. rajas has to be engaged and then directed, or it runs wild.

“rajas guna is of the nature of passion. it arises from worldly desires and affections and binds the soul through attachment to fruitive actions.” — bhagavad gita 14:7

rajasic foods: spicy foods, caffeine, stimulants, fried foods. rajasic environments: loud music, overstimulation, competition, excessive social activity.

———

sattva — the quality of clarity

sattva is light, harmony, clarity, truth. it is the quality of the early morning before the sun rises — still, luminous, and alive with possibility. it is the state the yogi is always working toward.

in the body: lightness, vitality, ease. the body feels clean and responsive. there is no heaviness, no agitation — just clear, sustainable energy.

in the mind: clarity, wisdom, compassion, peace. the sattvic mind perceives things as they are. it is not clouded by tamas or scattered by rajas. it can see — and from that seeing, it acts correctly.

in its fullness: the neutral mind. intuition. the ability to be in the world without being of it. the capacity to handle whatever comes without losing your center.

“sattva is the pure, neutral, subtle and sublime quality. it separates what is real from the unreal. it represents totality as totality.” — from the teachings of yogi bhajan

sattvic foods: fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, dairy — foods that are clean, fresh, and life-giving. sattvic environments: natural settings, spiritual community, early morning practice, silence.

———

the goal is not sattva — it’s beyond

here is where the teaching gets subtle.

the goal of yogic practice is to cultivate sattva — but the ultimate goal is to transcend all three gunas entirely. even sattva, as beautiful as it is, still binds. it binds through attachment to clarity, to happiness, to the experience of knowing.

the bhagavad gita puts it directly: when one rises above all three gunas, one is freed from birth, old age, disease, and death — and attains enlightenment. this state is called gunatita — beyond the gunas. the witness. the one who sees the gunas operating without being moved by them.

“when one rises above the three gunas that originate in the body, one is freed from birth, old age, disease, and death, and attains enlightenment.” — bhagavad gita 14:20

this is not a distant or abstract goal. it is a real state — and one that kundalini yoga moves you toward with every practice. the neutral mind is the entry point to gunatita. when you can sit in meditation and watch the gunas moving through you — tamas rising, rajas firing, sattva clarifying — without attaching to any of it, you are touching the space beyond.

———

reading your life through the gunas

once you understand the gunas, you start to see them everywhere — in your moods, your habits, your cravings, your relationships, your choices.

when you can’t get off the couch, when everything feels heavy, when you’re avoiding everything: that’s tamas. the prescription is not more rest. it’s movement — breath of fire, a cold shower, a brisk walk, anything that introduces rajas.

when you’re scattered, anxious, overworking, unable to settle: that’s excess rajas. the prescription is not more doing. it’s stillness — long deep breathing, meditation, nature, silence.

when you feel clear, compassionate, energized without agitation, able to see your life with some perspective: that’s sattva. maintain it. protect it. don’t let the environment pull you back down.

“the most powerful thing you can do in the morning is rise before the sun, while the earth is still sattvic, and practice. that sattva will carry you through the entire day.” — yogi bhajan

this is why sadhana in the ambrosial hours — before sunrise, when the earth’s own electromagnetic field is at its most sattvic — is the cornerstone of the practice. you are not just meditating in a convenient time slot. you are working with the gunas of the planet itself.

———

you are not at the mercy of the gunas. you are the one who can learn to see them, shift them, and ultimately — move beyond them.

that is what the practice is for. ❤️‍🔥

blonde is a reader-supported publication. — yogi bhajan

the auric body is the seventh body in the ten-body system of kundalini yoga. it is the electromagnetic field that surrounds your physical body — extending up to nine feet in every direction when it’s healthy and strong. it is not a metaphor. it is a measurable energetic reality.

yogi bhajan was pointing at something specific here: you can manage your personality, curate your image, perform a version of yourself for the world. but the aura doesn’t perform. it is the real you — the one that people feel before you open your mouth. it is your home, the field you actually live in, and it tells the truth whether you want it to or not.

———

what the auric body is

the aura is a sphere of electromagnetic energy generated by the flow of prana through the energy meridians of the physical body. it encompasses the arc line, the subtle body, and the radiant body — and acts as the container that holds all of your life force energy together.

most children can see auras naturally between the ages of two and four. then the pituitary gland shifts, and this perception closes — unless it is deliberately cultivated through practice.

the aura is not fixed. it changes constantly in response to your thoughts, your emotional state, your health, your practice, your environment. it is a living field — and it is responsive to everything you do.

“spirituality cannot be taught, it has to be caught — like the measles. you get it from someone who has got it.” — yogi bhajan

this is not a poetic statement. when you are in the aura of a spiritually elevated person, your auric field interacts with theirs — and it is automatically elevated. the energy is contagious. this is why sangat (spiritual community) matters. this is why who you spend your time with shapes you at a level far deeper than conversation.

———

what it does

the auric body has two primary functions: protection and elevation.

protection

a strong aura acts as a shield. negativity — other people’s projections, environmental toxicity, psychic interference — doesn’t penetrate it. it bounces off. you can move through difficult environments, difficult people, difficult circumstances and remain intact. not because nothing lands, but because you have a field strong enough to process and release what isn’t yours.

a weak aura has gaps — and those gaps are where things get in. you absorb moods, energies, and thought patterns that don’t belong to you. you leave interactions feeling depleted and don’t know why. you are affected by everything, protected by nothing.

elevation

a strong aura doesn’t just protect you — it uplifts everything around you. people feel better in your presence. rooms change when you enter them. you carry a field of healing simply by being there.

“those people who have a very strong magnetic field — electric charge, life force, circumvent force — can liberate others with touch and mental projection, and where their steps shall be, their truth shall be.” — yogi bhajan

this is what it means to be a healer. not a technique, not a modality — a field. the aura is the mechanism.

———

when it’s strong

you feel elevated — not in an airy way, but grounded and clear. negativity doesn’t stick. you have a natural compassion and openness to others that doesn’t cost you anything. your presence is felt. people trust you instinctively. you move through the world with a kind of immunity — not that nothing happens, but that you can handle whatever does. your personality shines through without effort or performance.

key phrase: platform of elevation. you uplift yourself and everyone around you simply by showing up.

———

when it’s weak

insecurity. this is the primary signal. a weak aura creates a constant, low-level anxiety that you can’t quite locate. you feel unsafe in environments that others move through easily. you conform — not because you want to, but because your field isn’t strong enough to hold your own reality in the presence of others. you people-please. you’re paranoid. you can’t trust yourself.

you also get sick more. yogi bhajan was direct about this: disease enters through the aura before it reaches the physical body. a compromised field is the first step toward physical illness — not the last.

“your shallowness or greatness of the soul shows up in your aura.” — yogi bhajan

———

how to strengthen it

wear white

this is the most practical thing you can do. white contains all colors of the spectrum and acts as an extension and amplifier of the auric field. this is not superstition — it is the reason kundalini practitioners wear white. the fiber matters too: natural fabrics (cotton, linen, wool, silk) allow the aura to breathe. synthetics compress it.

keep your hair

yogi bhajan taught extensively on this. the hair is an antenna — it picks up pranic energy from the environment and channels it into the body. cutting the hair cuts the antenna. keeping the hair, and keeping it covered during sadhana, amplifies the auric field significantly.

triangle pose and archer pose

both of these postures directly build the electromagnetic field. triangle pose is one of the most powerful aura-strengthening exercises in all of kundalini yoga — three minutes daily will produce noticeable results within forty days.

breath of fire

because the aura is fed by the flow of prana through the meridians, anything that increases pranic charge builds the aura. breath of fire — the rapid, rhythmic breath that fires the navel — is one of the fastest ways to expand the electromagnetic field. three minutes of breath of fire will change your aura in the moment.

sadhana

a consistent daily practice is the foundation. there are no shortcuts here. the aura is built slowly and sustainably through the accumulation of daily practice. miss a day and you don’t collapse — but the field is built over time, like muscle. the ambrosial hours (before sunrise) are the most powerful time to practice because the electromagnetic field of the earth is at its most receptive.

“your security doesn’t lie in money or position. it lies in the strength of your aura.” christian, sikh, buddhist, hindu — the halo is always there. artists have been painting it for thousands of years. most people assume it’s symbolic.

it isn’t.

“you are the master of your destiny, you are the prediction of your horoscope, you are the leader of your day, you are the light of your life.” — yogi bhajan

the arc line is a clairvoyant reality. it is the sixth body in the ten-body system of kundalini yoga — a band of energy that extends from earlobe to earlobe across the brow, radiating outward like a crown of light. it is real, it is yours, and it can be strengthened.

———

what the arc line is

the arc line is the nucleus of the aura — the point where the physical and the spiritual meet. it is the energetic bridge between the lower bodies (physical, mental) and the higher bodies (pranic, subtle, radiant). in the language of sikh dharma, it represents miri-piri: the balance between the earthly and the cosmic.

it governs the pituitary gland — the master gland of the body — which regulates the entire glandular and nervous system. when the arc line is strong and clear, the pituitary functions optimally, the nervous system is steady, and the intuition is sharp. these are not separate phenomena. they are the same phenomenon, seen from different angles.

women have two arc lines: one from earlobe to earlobe across the brow, and a second from nipple to nipple across the heart center. this second arc line makes the feminine energetic field exceptionally intuitive and sensitive — and also exceptionally vulnerable to emotional pain, dishonesty, and betrayal. when a woman’s heart has been broken, it is her arc line that takes the hit first.

“I know that the unknown is known to me.” — yogi bhajan (affirmation of the arc line)

———

what it does

the arc line is your protection and your projection — simultaneously.

protection: a strong arc line acts as a psychic shield. negativity doesn’t penetrate it. danger is sensed before it arrives. you walk into a room and immediately know something — that is your arc line reading the field. yogi bhajan said that a strong arc line and aura can shield you from disease and accidents by giving you sensitivity to your environment.

projection: whatever you are vibrating — your intentions, your prayers, your commitments — the arc line broadcasts it. it is the transmitter. when you sit in meditation with a clear intention, it is the arc line that sends that signal out into the field. this is why focused prayer works. this is why what you commit to tends to manifest. the arc line is the mechanism.

“if your psyche and your halo is there, this exercise shall give you your halo as it should be; more you do it, more fast you will be you. opportunities will come to you, you don’t have to chase after them.” — yogi bhajan

your arc line also holds your karmas, your integrity, and your destiny. it is, in a very real sense, the record of who you have been and the projection of who you are becoming.

———

bowing

this is why we bow.

when you bow to a teacher, a sacred text, or a high being, you are bringing your arc line into contact with theirs. it is not an act of submission. it is an act of transmission. you are deliberately placing your halo within the field of something greater, and inviting that resonance in.

a saint is said to have a triple arc line — so vast and refined that its radius extends far beyond the physical form. when you are in the presence of such a being, even briefly, the contact is real. the teachings say that every soul is guaranteed at least one moment of contact with their spiritual teacher in a lifetime — whether they recognize it or not.

“every human gets at least one chance to meet their spiritual teacher. the moment might be brief — but it’s a guaranteed destiny moment that has the potential to entirely shift your trajectory. it’s up to you to recognize it.” — yogi bhajan

———

when it’s strong

focus. the ability to meditate deeply and stay there. intuition that is quick, clear, and accurate. prayers that land. a sense that you are moving in the right direction even when you can’t explain why. opportunities that come to you without you chasing them. a kind of radiance that people feel before you say a word.

when the arc line is functioning at full capacity, your word becomes law — not because you are forcing anything, but because your projection is so clear and so aligned with your soul’s truth that the universe simply responds.

———

when it’s weak

difficulty concentrating. unfocused, scattered energy. susceptibility to other people’s moods and projections — you absorb everything, you can’t filter. inability to manifest what you’re praying for. glandular imbalances. emotional instability. a sense that you have no real psychic protection, that life is just happening to you.

in extreme imbalance: you become easily influenced. you make decisions based on other people’s realities rather than your own. you lose your center repeatedly, and you’re not sure why.

“the moment you consciously decide to align your arc line with truth, your destiny changes.” — yogi bhajan

———

how to strengthen it

integrity

the arc line is more sensitive to what you commit to than almost anything else. every time you break your word — to yourself or to others — the arc line takes a hit. every time you keep it, it brightens. this is not a moral judgment. it is a technical reality. your halo is a direct reflection of your integrity.

meditation at the brow point

any meditation that directs focus to the third eye directly strengthens the arc line. trataka (fixed-gaze meditation), kirtan kriya, and meditations with drishti to the tip of the nose all work the pituitary and brow point, which is the physical seat of the arc line.

gyan chakra kriya

yogi bhajan called this the most sacred kriya of the yogis — the one that can produce miracles. it builds the arc line and aura simultaneously, brightening the halo and drawing prosperity through radiance. practiced daily for 40 days, it begins to attract what you need without you having to chase it.

truthfulness

the arc line lives and dies by truth. gossip, lies, and toxic speech weaken it directly. refined speech, clear intention, and honest living feed it. this is not about being rigid — it is about recognizing that your words are part of your projection, and your projection shapes your reality.

“your security doesn’t lie in money or position. it lies in the strength of your aura.” — yogi bhajan

———

take a moment right now. close your eyes. tune in to the space from earlobe to earlobe, across your brow. see it as a band of light — — yogi bhajan

according to yogi bhajan, death is not an ending. it is a process — a highly specific, navigable journey that the soul undertakes with the subtle body as its vehicle. understanding it changes how you live. because how you live is how you will die.

———

the moment of death

yogi bhajan described the final moments with remarkable precision.

in the last 30 seconds of life, your entire life flashes before you. in the last 20 seconds, you judge yourself — not god judging you, but you, seeing clearly, without the ego’s filters. in the last 10 seconds, you take your final breath. and then the soul, carried in the subtle body, begins to separate from the physical.

the physical body — made of the five tattvas — returns to the five tattvas. the auric body dissolves back into the light. the pranic body returns to the universal prana. the mind returns to the universal mind.

“the auric body will go to the light. the pranic body will go to the prana. but the subtle body will carry the soul and shall process to the blue ethers. it is a conscious act.” — yogi bhajan, april 2, 1981

what remains — what continues — is the subtle body, carrying the soul.

———

the tunnel. the choice.

as the soul leaves, it enters what yogi bhajan called a cylinder — the tunnel of white light described by virtually every person who has had a near-death experience. it is real. you move through it.

at the end of the tunnel, there is a fork. on one side: heat. on the other: cold, like snow. on both sides, your relatives — calling you toward them.

the teaching: go toward the snow.

the cold side represents detachment, clarity, and forward movement. the heat represents unresolved attachment pulling you back. this is not a metaphor. it is a navigational instruction.

from there, the soul enters the electromagnetic field of the earth — and hangs there for 17 days.

———

the 17 days

according to the teachings of kundalini yoga, death must bow to the warrior for 17 days. during this time, the departing soul is freeing itself from earthly attachment and releasing from the magnetic field of the earth. some souls — the privileged ones, as yogi bhajan called them — use this time to travel, to say goodbye, to visit sacred places. the soul still has some tether to the life it lived.

this is why we chant akal for 17 days from the moment of death. the sound current of akal — meaning undying, deathless — helps the soul complete its unfinished business and navigate the transition out of the earth’s electromagnetic field.

“the chanting of akal creates a vibratory frequency that assists the departing soul on its journey through the ethers to final liberation.”

at the end of 17 days, the soul makes a choice: remain in the electromagnetic field of the earth, or cross through — into the blue ethers.

———

the five blue ethers

once the soul crosses the electromagnetic field of the earth, the real journey begins. there are five levels of blue ether — five realms of consciousness the soul must pass through, each requiring a certain level of purification to enter.

the soul is never alone. depending on your spiritual orientation, a guide is waiting — a teacher, a master, a saint who has traveled this road before you. for a sikh, it may be guru nanak. for a christian, christ. the lineage you practiced in life will show up for you here.

the first blue ether — karta purakh

this is the akashic records. the cosmic library. every life history, every soul’s file, every event that has ever occurred — it is all held here.

the subtle body carries your individual file into this realm, and it merges with the cosmic storehouse. here, the soul is accounted for — a clear, factual viewing of the life just lived, its karmas, its debts, its gifts. it is not a judgment. it is an audit.

from this audit, the soul intuitively knows what comes next: what lessons remain, what karma needs to be balanced, what the next step is.

the second and third blue ethers — purification

the second and third ethers are realms of purification and instruction. the soul works — under the guidance of its teachers — to complete what wasn’t finished in life. lessons are received. karma is processed.

to pass from one ether to the next, there is a kind of doorway — a test of the mind, lasting somewhere between 32 seconds and three minutes. only when a certain level of internal purification is reached is the soul granted passage.

“it takes many thousands and hundreds of thousands of years, trillions of years, for this soul to come out of the third layer of the blue ether. it is not a small thing.” — yogi bhajan, july 11, 1975

this is not frightening. it is simply the scale of the journey. the soul is not rushing. time works differently here.

it is in the third blue ether that the soul’s next incarnation is designed — the body it will take, the family it will enter, the destiny and fate that will challenge it.

“what kind of body a man shall have, what kind of destiny and fate shall challenge it — is all performed at the stage called the third blue ether.” — yogi bhajan, july 9, 1990

the fourth blue ether — the lighted self

this is the realm of the great guides. the masters who have completed their soul’s journey and chosen not to return — not because they have abandoned humanity, but because their consciousness is so vast and so clear that they can serve from here, radiating across centuries.

yogi bhajan is here. guru nanak is here. the great saints and teachers of all lineages who have completed their earthly rounds — they radiate from this ether, continuing to guide and uplift souls still making their way through the journey.

“the fourth ether is where the soul never returns.” — yogi bhajan, july 9, 1990

when we don’t live in a physical body, we live in the subtle and radiant bodies. and the radiant body, as yogi bhajan said, has no end — as long as the sun shall shine, the radiant body lives.

the fifth — union

beyond the fourth ether is not a place. it is a state.

pure union. no separation. absolute oneness with the divine. this is the end of the soul’s journey across time and space — and the beginning of something that has no name because there is no one left to name it.

———

what this means for how you live

this is not a morbid teaching. it is one of the most practical ones there is.

the ethers you are able to access after death are the ethers you are able to access in life. the neutral mind you develop in meditation is the same neutral mind that will carry you through the transition. the practice you build now — the sadhana, the mantra, the meditation during the ambrosial hours — is not just for this life. it is the momentum that will carry you through what comes after.

“if we meditate during the ambrosial hours of the morning, this practice during life, this divine habit, will carry us through the ethers like a lightning bolt at the time of death.”

yogi bhajan didn’t teach us about death to frighten us. he taught us so we could prepare — so that when the moment comes, we move through it with consciousness, with courage, and with a guide already waiting on the other side.

the map exists. the practice is the preparation.

akal. ❤️‍🔥

blonde is a reader-supported publication. the soul’s pull toward its own infinite source.

when it’s strong: you have healthy discernment. you read situations correctly. you know when to say no.

when it’s too strong: you’re paranoid. everything is a threat. you can’t move forward because the mind has flagged danger everywhere.

when it’s weak: you walk into situations that cost you. you override your gut. you ignore the signals.

“you have earned the right to this life. you have the negative mind to instinctively protect you. it alerts you to something that is wrong or is a threat.” — yogi bhajan

———

the positive mind

the positive mind is expansive, active, optimistic. it searches for possibility, pleasure, and opportunity in every situation. it gives you willpower, enthusiasm, and the courage to act.

here’s the problem: when the positive and negative minds are not regulated by the neutral mind, they fight. the negative mind fires a warning. instead of offering a balanced counter-view, the positive mind starts pulling every past memory that supports the negative thought — piling it higher and higher — until you’re completely overwhelmed.

or, the positive mind goes into blind optimism, overriding real warning signals. you end up taking risks you shouldn’t, ignoring what your gut is clearly telling you.

most people live their lives bouncing between these two. perpetually. exhaustingly. this is called mental intrigue — and it is the source of most human suffering.

“a person who does not deal with the neutral mind, even with all the wealth, shall not prosper and can’t be happy — because negative and positive cancel each other.” — yogi bhajan

———

the neutral mind

the neutral mind is the goal. it receives input from both the negative and the positive minds, evaluates without attachment, and delivers a clear answer — from the soul, not the subconscious.

this is not cold detachment. it’s compassionate, meditative clarity. it sees both sides, and then it sees you — who you are in relation to all of it — and it tells you what to do.

it processes information in under nine seconds. when your neutral mind is developed, you don’t agonize over decisions. you know.

when it’s strong: you’re unshakeable. you make clear decisions. everything that happens to you — good or bad — becomes a blessing, a gift, or a lesson. nothing is wasted.

when it’s weak: you can’t decide. you’re a victim of circumstance. you get pulled into other people’s dramas. you suffer in the gap between what the negative and positive minds are screaming at you.

“the meditative mind is the neutral mind that runs your destiny. there are three ways to conduct your destiny: through the law of karma — action and reaction; you can tune into the magnetic field of the earth and just float with it as a freeloader; or, your life can be run by that magnetic, attractive, creative, meditative, neutral mind. that way you do very well.” — yogi bhajan

the neutral mind is accessed through meditation. there is no other way in.

———

the 81 facets

here’s where it gets deep. every thought that enters your mind doesn’t just pass through three minds — it interacts with 81 facets of the total mind structure.

the three functional minds (negative, positive, neutral) interact with three impersonal minds — manas (the sensory mind), ahangkar (the ego mind), and buddhi (the wisdom mind). this creates 9 aspects. those 9 aspects interact again, creating 27 projections. and those 27 projections create 81 facets — 81 possible ways a thought can land, be colored, and determine your response.

this is why two people can experience the exact same situation and respond completely differently. their facets are firing differently, based on their conditioning, their past, their emotional patterns.

“if you can’t see god in all, you can’t see god at all.” — yogi bhajan

yogi bhajan gave specific meditations to balance each of the 9 aspects and each of the 27 projections. this is the science of humanology — and it is the most precise map of the human psyche that exists.

———

the subconscious: where the real work happens

with every blink of the eye, 1,000 thoughts are downloaded into the crown chakra. your conscious mind only registers a fraction of them. the rest go directly into the subconscious — a holding tank that extends, according to yogi bhajan, eight million miles in all directions.

the subconscious feeds the mind constantly — and if it’s full of old pain, old patterns, and unprocessed experience, those are the thoughts that get amplified. this is why willpower alone doesn’t change behavior. the programming is running beneath the surface.

“the mind will be totally understood in a thousand years from now. and that will be the beginning of the end of all suffering.” — yogi bhajan

this is also why examining your problems doesn’t solve them. shadow work, analysis, therapy — these operate at the level of the subconscious, rearranging the contents of the tank. kundalini yoga takes a different approach entirely: it uses mantra, breath, and kriya to elevate you out of the subconscious and into the superconscious, where new patterns can be installed at the level of the soul.

you don’t have to empty the tank. you have to transcend it.

———

so what do we do

the answer is the same as it always is: practice.

mantra re-codes the neurology. it installs new patterns beneath the level of conscious thought, directly into the subconscious, so that the mind begins to automatically select the highest thought — before you even have to think about it.

meditation builds the neutral mind. the longer and more consistently you sit, the more stable your neutral mind becomes, and the less you are at the mercy of the duel between your negative and positive.

this is not a slow process. with the right technology, practiced consistently, the mind can be retrained faster than you think.

“to win the game of life you must have caliber. to have caliber you must have an applied mind. an applied mind is a mind that processes everything positive and negative, then acts from the neutral mind to express you.” — yogi bhajan

your mind is not your enemy. it is your most powerful asset.

train it. ❤️‍🔥

blonde is a reader-supported publication. the one you can see and touch — is actually the least of it.

according to the teachings of kundalini yoga as brought forward by yogi bhajan, you are aten-body system. one physical body, three mental bodies, and six energy bodies. all of them real. all of them requiring attention.

yogi bhajan said: “if you understand that you are ten bodies, and you are aware of those ten bodies, and you keep them in balance, the whole universe will be in balance with you.”

when something is off in your life — your health, your relationships, your sense of direction — there’s a body out of balance. when something suddenly clicks, when life starts to move, when you feel untouchable — that’s the system working.

here’s the map.

1. the soul body

your soul body is the foundational you. the piece of infinity that lives inside this human form.

it doesn’t age, doesn’t die, doesn’t accumulate trauma or bad decisions. it just is.

when it’s strong: you lead from the heart. creativity flows. you feel your purpose without having to think about it.

when it’s weak: you’re running on intellect alone — in your head, cut off from your inner knowing, searching for something you can’t name.

key phrase: heart over head.

“when the head rules, both the head and the heart are wrong. when the heart rules, both are right.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: heart-opening kriyas, long deep breathing, anything that raises the

kundalini. the soul body responds to devotion, to sadhana, to the act of showing up for your practice before the rest of the world wakes up.

2. the negative mind

don’t be fooled by the name. the negative mind is your protector. it scans the environment,

reads the room, spots the danger before you consciously clock it. it also carries the longing to belong — the soul’s deep pull toward the infinite.

when it’s strong: discernment. healthy boundaries. the ability to recognize what’s real.

when it’s weak: you walk into situations that cost you. you don’t listen to your gut. you

ignore the signs. when it’s too strong: paranoia. paralysis. everything looks like a threat.

“the negative mind gives you the longing to belong.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: discipline and integrity. this body is balanced by keeping your word — to yourself first. the negative mind thrives on structure, on a consistent practice, on living in alignment with what you know to be true.

3. the positive mind

the dreamer. the expander. the part of you that sees possibility, generates enthusiasm, and pulls others into your orbit.

when it’s strong: you have willpower. you spot opportunity. people feel uplifted around you.

when it’s weak: you collapse into negativity and can’t find a way out.

the negative and positive minds are meant to work in dialogue — both feeding information upward, to be evaluated by the neutral mind. most people are stuck in the duel between the two, bouncing back and forth indefinitely.

“your positive mind should be so positive that negativity cannot enter.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: navel work. anything that builds core strength and self-esteem directly

feeds the positive mind. when the navel point is strong, the will is strong, and the positive mind has the energy it needs to do its job.

4. the neutral mind

this is the yogic mind. the meditative mind. it receives input from the negative and positive minds, and delivers a clear read within seconds — not through analysis, but through intuition.

this is where the soul speaks.

when it’s strong: you make decisions quickly and correctly. you don’t get destabilized by other people’s chaos. everything that happens to you, you can use.

when it’s weak: you can’t decide. you feel like you don’t belong anywhere. you suffer in the gap between two competing pulls.

this is the mind kundalini yoga is most directly developing. the neutral mind is the goal.

key phrase: cup of prayer. present. neither full nor empty. open.

“yogis aim to make the neutral mind their default position. from here you look at the whole play of life with compassion — you do not react, you act consciously.”

yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: meditation. this is the direct path. any meditative practice that trains you to

observe without reacting is developing the neutral mind. the longer you sit, the more stable

it becomes.

5. the physical body

the temple. the vehicle. the bridge between the invisible and the visible. it’s not who you are — but it’s how you show up here.

key phrase: be balanced and teach.

the physical body is meant to be in service. when it’s strong, it becomes a channel — for healing, for teaching, for presence. when it’s neglected or over-prioritized (obsession with appearance, athleticism as identity), it pulls you out of balance in the other direction.

“the physical body is the balance point between heaven and earth.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: balance. not more of one thing, but equilibrium across all things — diet, sleep, movement, rest, work, play. the physical body thrives on rhythm and regularity. a consistent daily sadhana is one of the most powerful things you can do for it.

6. the arc line

your halo. this is a clairvoyant reality — when you look at images of saints and masters

throughout history, the halo is always there. because it’s real.

the arc line extends from earlobe to earlobe across the brow. it’s the nucleus of the aura, and it regulates the nervous system and glandular balance. women have a second arc line between the nipples.

it holds your integrity, your karmas, your destiny. it protects you from negativity. it’s what you’re reading when you walk into a room and immediately know something about a person.

a saint is said to have a triple arc line.

we bow to connect our arc line with the arc line of a high being.

when it’s strong: your intuition is sharp. your projection is clear. what you commit to,

manifests.

“your arc line is your antenna to the universe — it picks up what is coming before it arrives.”

— yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: trataka (fixed gaze meditations), kirtan kriya, any meditation that works the brow point and third eye. the arc line is also deeply sensitive to what you commit to — breaking your word weakens it, integrity strengthens it.

7. the auric body

your electromagnetic field. it extends up to nine feet around you in all directions when it’s healthy — a container that holds your energy in, and keeps what you don’t need out.

when it’s strong: people feel you when you enter a room. negativity doesn’t land. you move through the world with a kind of immunity.

when it’s weak: you absorb everything. other people’s moods, environments, energies — all of it comes in. you leave interactions feeling drained and can’t explain why.

“your aura is determined by what you vibrate. whatever your mental thoughts are, that is your aura and that is the color of your aura. you are always known by your projected

personality — everyone wants his real personality to be hidden. but your aura always

represents your real personality.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: wear white. the color white contains all colors of the spectrum and acts as an extension of the auric field. this is why kundalini practitioners wear white — it’s not aesthetic, it’s technology. triangle pose, archer pose, and any kriya that opens the chest and expands the breath will build the aura.

8. the pranic body

prana is life force. the pranic body is what animates you — the current that runs through everything. it connects you to the universal flow of energy.

when it’s strong: you’re fearless. you have vitality. you don’t run out.

when it’s weak: fear moves in. fatigue. the sense that life is happening to you rather than through you.

breath is the primary access point to the pranic body. this is why pranayama is not optional.

“the pranic body gives you energy, courage, control over your mind, and healing power. when you breathe, you are feeding your pranic body.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: breath of fire. long deep breathing. any pranayama. the pranic body is fed directly through the breath — there is no shortcut and no substitute. a daily pranayama practice, even just three minutes, will transform this body over time.

9. the subtle body

this is the body of mastery. it allows you to perceive the invisible — to feel the nuance in a situation, to read what isn’t being said, to navigate the cosmic play rather than just the surface of things.

it is deeply connected to the soul body. when the physical body dies, it is the subtle body that carries the soul onward. (this is why we chant akal — to help the subtle body navigate the layers of blue ether after death.)

great teachers continue to reach their students through the subtle body long after they leave the physical plane.

when it’s strong: mastery. the ability to learn anything quickly. you move through life with grace and subtlety rather than force.

“the spirit and the subtle body are very much related — they never leave each other. so anything which is refined — refined art, refined acts, refined speech, anything which is not gross — will put you nearer to the soul. that is a rather simple way of reaching your god-consciousness.” — yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: refinement. subtlety in action, in speech, in thought. this body also

responds to long, committed practice — 1,000 days of a consistent sadhana is a classical prescription for strengthening the subtle body. it is built through mastery, not shortcuts.

10. the radiant body

spiritual royalty.

the radiant body is your magnetism, your courage, your shine. people with a strong radiant body have what we call charisma — their presence works before they say a word. good things are drawn to them. obstacles don’t stop them.

when it’s strong: you’re all in. committed. nothing intimidates you. your very presence elevates the room.

when it’s weak: you avoid conflict. you shrink. you’re afraid to be seen.

the radiant body runs on commitment. there is no partial. it’s the body that demands you show up fully — to your practice, to your life, to your word.

“you have ten bodies but your radiant body solidly affects and acts within a twenty-five mile radius. let us not be like mummies, all wrapped up — ancient souls wrapped in the cloth of thoughts and the wax of ego. you are destined to become masters, and you are master of your good luck, your best self and your radiant body.”

— yogi bhajan

to strengthen it: commitment. show up. do the practice when you don’t feel like it. the

radiant body doesn’t build in the easy moments — it builds in the ones where you chose to continue anyway. anything done for 1,000 days will ignite it.

the eleventh embodiment

beyond the ten is the eleventh embodiment - the combination of all the 10 bodies. the state where all ten bodies are in balance, duality dissolves, and you are simply in the flow of truth. this is the goal of the practice. this is what it’s all for.

disease exists first in the energy bodies before it reaches the physical. imbalance shows up in the subtle layers long before it becomes something you can see or measure. this is why working only on the physical body — through exercise, diet, conventional medicine — addresses the downstream effects, not the source.

kundalini yoga works on all ten bodies simultaneously. that’s why the results are fast. that’s why a three-minute meditation can shift something that years of thinking about it couldn’t touch.

you are a spiritual being having a human experience.

Subscribe now
